Does any remember when GM was forced to recall most of its late 70's-80's pickups because the gas tank(s) were out side the frame rails. I owned one of those trucks and got a $1000 certificate on top of the trade value if I upgraded trucks. That was a boom for GM's truck sales. Best part of the whole thing was "Dateline" did a huge investigation which prompted the recall. They claimed trucks leak and cause a fire from a side impact. They showed a video of a truck burning after a side impact. Turns out Dateline could not get the tank to leak during tests so they attached a small explosive to the tank and ran a car into it. Very dramatic, they got the recall started on false information just for the rating and the show is still on the air.
I believe you have a wwwaaaayyy greater chance of killed in the rollover vs burning to death. Just my two cents
Hmm...51 deaths out of 2.7 million? I'm going to make a crazy assumption and say that more people have been killed in off road accidents then this is impacting. All vehicles are death traps regardless of how safe they try to make them.
I'm glad to see that the general consensus is that this is getting blown up (no pun intended) way out of proportion. I came here to check this out, because I only just read about it in the paper today.
I've got a factory tow package, so I hope I'm a little better off - mental note: research skid plate for tank.
All in all, I just thank god I didn't end up backing into that Pinto in the Walmart parking lot this morning - I don't even want to imagine the carnage.
People have been trying to get this and death wobble recalled for years. Both are design choice that have their drawbacks, but under most circumstances are completely safe.

I'm totally making light of the issue. Didn't realize it was that time again, but I'm glad it is. These threads are funny and full of fear mongering, people wanting free stuff and safety nazis that want to eliminate all danger from a dangerous world. If your scared of your jeep, sell it.
