Opinions need (possible XJ purchase)

Okay i went to look at a 2000 Cherokee Sport today. 113K miles, 4.0 engine, its in very good condition (silver with black trim). Anyway on the internet it has been listed for $5900 but when i got there today the sticker had been changed to $4900. The guy said they've had it for a few months and are ready to get rid of it and at 4900 they arent making much off of it (yeah right).

Anyway, ive got 1994 Grand Cherokee Limited 214K on it but 55K on new engine and 40K on new transmission. Overall its in good shape, no tears in the leather, clean on the inside. The radio doesnt work and the blower motor is intermittent and it has the viscious coupling issue but i drive it every day and it runs strong as all get out.

Anyway the guy looked at it and said he'd give me $500 then he said he'd take it plus 4000 for the XJ (tax, tags, title and 3,000/3 month warranty included). Said he would just take my GCL to a little car lot outside of town and list it for 1000 or 1500 or something.

How bad of a deal is this?

Well in good condition KBB lists that XJ at $3200. I'd say you're getting hosed.

i'd balk on that too. Push the fight and tell him no. say you'll trade yours and pay 2500 and see what the salesman says. if he says no then just say ok and thank you, then walk away. he will call you or try to stop you before you leave good if he really wants to unload this XJ.

probably because some people buying don't know any better or do research and these guys schiesters are out to rip off folks. Do a Kelley Blue Book search, print out the private party value & retail value, and carry it with you. Excellent condition Retail is around 5400!!! in your area, but this can't be in that great of shape. Private party value is around 3400. offer 3400 and your ride and see if they do it otherwise look on craigs list!

So KBB says $5070 and they are asking 4900 plus with my ZJ trade i can get it for $4000. I guess the they arent too far off with their price so the question becomes how much am i being low balled on my ZJ?

Yep-here is the KBB for my area on this one:
Vehicle Condition Ratings
Check Vehicle Title History
Excellent
$5,070
  • Looks new, is in excellent mechanical condition and needs no reconditioning.
  • Never had any paint or body work and is free of rust.
  • Clean title history and will pass a smog and safety inspection.
  • Engine compartment is clean, with no fluid leaks and is free of any wear or visible defects.
  • Complete and verifiable service records.
Less than 5% of all used vehicles fall into this category.

Look up the BB value of your ZJ for trade-in and then you'll know.

2000 XJ is more likely to have a head issue if it ever gets too hot, personally I would just keep the ZJ with the V8 and forget about the XJ.

I would tend to agree. With what you'd end up spending on an XJ, I'd keep the ZJ (especially with the newer engine and trans) and replace the T-case and stereo.

If you really want to get an XJ, I would go with a private purchase. Dealers really like to fluff the prices of Jeeps way over the private party average.

Thanks guys. Im probably just gonna sit tight for now. Its just my gas maileage sucks and i took a new job and was hoping an XJ might get me a few more MPG's but maybe not enough to be worth the trouble.

Its a catch 22. You got to a dealer and find a non-modded XJ and they've inflated the price or you go the private party route and folks have modded them all out and they have tons of issues.

If you're wanting MPGs ... I highly suggest anything besides a Jeep.
