New to the jeep world, having some problems.

Alright so I just bought this 1997 jeep grand cherokee. When i hit the accelerator, the best way I can put it, is that it feels sluggish, like not enough of the engine power is going to the wheels. I also noticed the temperature steadily climbing as I drove today (hasn't overheated, not sure if that's an issue). However, check engine light is on, the dealership i got it from said the code had something to do with a transmission governor solenoid (or something of the sort, i'm not too sure) and said it wasn't a huge issue, however, I have the feeling that this solenoid problem may have something to do with the sluggish behavior. Any tips (in simplest language) would be most appreciated, thanks guys!!

what car did you drive before this jeep? the "sluggish" feeling might just be perceived if you drove something relatively quick before this. 4.0s are not speed demons, especially in a ZJ.
