My 3rd ZJ...the slow 4.0 project
What is up?
I havent posted here in a couple years since I regretfully sold my niner, but I am back again with my 3rd ZJ thanks to the Jeep bug biting me again. (it never goes away!!)
Im not new to this, and once again I am excited to turn wrenches on a Jeep again. Here are my prior ZJs...
My First ZJ- '97 5.2 Limited with BB and 31s..
My Second ZJ (I miss her everyday) '98 5.9 with a fair amount of motor work..
And I present to you all my 3rd baby...
1998 4.0 w/145k
She is pretty clean for her age and mileage and runs like a top. I got started with a few minor things right away.
Had these tails laying around from the niner so I threw them on, such a cleaner look then stock, i love them!
The I painted the grill flat black for the meantime..
Only issues are (i call these fun projects)..
-Minor valve cover gasket leak
-Needs new header panel, lights, grill
-Needs fuel pump (already have one, gas gauge doesn't read)
-Needs a wheel bearing on the rear (i think)
-Turn signals only flash with lights on (if someone can help with that I would be grateful)
Thats it tho, should only take a few weekends and one paycheck to fix everything. She's no 5.9 but I see alot of potential in the future....and I am thrilled to be a jeep owner again!

hmm...so the 4.0 came with a 3.73 rear????? Didn't know that, I love surprises :)
Yes the ones with the tow package. Non tow package is 3.55
Cool, thanks for clarifying. I didn't expect to see the tow package without a trailer hitch. Maybe a previous owner removed it...
first project underway and this thing is already pissing me off.
parts finally showed up and it was my day off...perfect
started pulling everything off..
cracked header panel which i was aware of, those things are flimsy anyway so no biggie....
I continue to remove the bumper (which was a pain in the *** since i never did it before)
So wonderful news it looks like this thing got banged up at one point. After this I stopped taking pictures, moving all the headlight adjusters from the broken header panel to the new one was fairly easy. But the part that drove me nuts was the HORRIBLE CRAP FITMENT of this crowne header panel. I thought crowne was the way to go. Guess not.
That resulted in my trimming and sanding various clips, retainers, and the new lights I purchased (they fit horrible too). I expected this though.
Finally got the headlights in...
After having to shave down the clips on the new headlights I was able to get them mounted. These were TYC brand btw and just like all the other non-oems they were a project to make fit.
The passenger side looks to be lined up correctly but everything on the driver side is crooked. I dont know weather to blame that on the non OEM header panel, or the fact that the jeep was clearly involved in an impact on that corner. The header panel mounted up with no issue, so I am a little confused. Either way, I dont care...I bought this thing to beat up on anyway, at least now I will be able to see at night.
Moral of this story is....BUY OEM PARTS. I guess I didnt learn my lesson from the first two jeeps I had
Also, by looking at the pics do you think I wil have any issues installing an aftermarket rad support?? Seems ok to me but not sure if the pushed in bumper support will cause any problems...
I hear ya on the header panel being a pain, and my headlights ended up kind of wonky too. As for the rad support, I've seen people with worse cross member damage run 'em with no problem.
Straightened out my drivers side headlight, put the bumper back since the smashed in crossmember wasnt pretty, and gave it a bath
It clean up pretty good for being the beat up turd that it is.
I had a lot of trouble lining things up with the crowne header panel and going by how perfectly it mounted on to the jeep, I cant blame the crooked drivers side headlight on the existing damage. Luckily I found a way to rig everything to make it look decent, and after Kolak told me the OEM header panel runs for about $500 i figured the extra work was worth it
