Seriously!

An exhaust shop in town quoted me $120 to fabricate a new Y-Pipe. I'm adding that to my list, as well. I plan on getting headers, eventually, but I can sell my Y-Pipe on here when I make the switch.

I found a cooler full of Guinness I had forgotten about. It's not my favorite, but I'm in Senior paper-writing hermit mode so it will have to do.

I'm buying a street bike this summer, but considering buying one of these as well to haul my camping stuff (dogs claim the back of the ZJ). Obviously I would reenforce it and get better tires/wheels:

Anyway, tonight I have a date with a "Nordic Blonde":

Not really build related, but I signed up for the MTII Basic Motor Cycle Riders Safety Class, today, and ordered a helmet, jacket, and gloves. Looking for a Kawasaki Ninja.

I got all the pieces to my Kolak exhaust! Heading to Washington DC for the rest of the week but will make an appointment for the install on Monday. Got the Flowmaster 40 SUV Muffler and a Magnaflow high-flow cat.

Off topic, but I picked up a 2003 Honda CBR 600 F4i. Needs new fairings, but at the price I couldn't pass it up.

Got my Kolak exhaust installed today - only cost me $80 for the install + weld. Sounds great! Not too loud but has a nice aggressive grumble. Very satisfied.

I will get you one once it warms up, here. I need to order a spool of black exhaust wrap. The exhaust is melting the rubber exhaust hanger and I also smell something else burning - that could just be the exhaust breaking in, I guess, but the hanger is certainly melting. This isn't a fault of Kolak, just happens with a bigger diameter exhaust.

Ordered both front cv axles. I knew one was donezo but when I took my Jeep to the exhaust shop I noticed the other was also donezo. Oh well. Once those are in and my front control arms are in, she should be good to go. Although, I feel like I say that a lot

I've put a lot of money into this ZJ... just to get it daily drivable (which it isn't, still). Probably at least $3,000 including the labor on somethings... thinking about selling it and getting a Wrangler in August. Wrangler body style never gets old, and they're tanks. Plus, I bought my ZJ to commute to my cabin, and right now I don't trust it to get me the 4 hours there. If it dies at the cabin, I'm screwed - no cell signal, and a looonngggg walk. Eh... decisions...

If you can sell it for a good price I'd say sell it. If you don't feel it's reliable enough than I wouldn't hesitate.

I have a pretty large commission check coming in August, which is what really got me thinking. Do I want to dump more money into the ZJ or should I just get a Wrangler? Right now the ZJ isn't reliable. The engine idles alright but but it needs brakes, both front CV axles (I have them) and front lower control arms (I have them too). I got under there yesterday and one of the old control arms will wiggle in my hand - it's that bad.

BUT my ZJ has no rust, so the body should be good to go for quite some time. Wranglers have the best resell value of a vehicle I can think of, I think the lowest ones in good condition are at least $8,000. But, even if I bought it for $8,000 I would inherit all of its problems and dump money into it. I really needed a larger 4x4 vehicle for my cabin in the winter - my Impreza can manage alright until the next snowfall, so I now have time.

So, after a long battle with my mind... I have decided to keep the ZJ. I like the hauling capacity and I need less than the cost of 2000 and newer Wrangler to get it in tip-top shape - far less than buying a Wrangler. I am going to put new brakes on and rebuild the transmission and engine, or maybe just put a new crate engine into it, I will let my mechanic decide that issue. It now has about 250,000 miles on it, so I'm curious if a rebuild will be worth it or if spending the $4,000 or so on a new engine install will be the better route. I'm also going to replace the water pump as well, since I don't know how long ago it was replaced and I want peace of mind. And, going to throw some Doug Thorley headers on to compliment my Kolak exhaust. I will just keep an old Huffy mountain bike at the cabin in case the Jeep wont start. Even a $90 tow 30 miles to the nearest mechanic and a night in a motel will still put me cheaper than buying a Wrangler.

BTW here's my cabin. Going to head up there, tomorrow, for the weekend.

That cabin looks fun, and good choice on not going to the dark side. If I may, if your going to drop in a crate engine (which I would do instead of a rebuild), drop a 5.9 in that sucker.

That's a good idea. I remember looking at the 5.9 swap thread a few months ago. It didn't seem like too many other parts had to be changed, and those parts should be replaced, anyway. If I do get a crate engine, it will for sure be a 5.9, assuming I can source the other parts fairly easily. My engine idles alright, but it is lacking power... so I think it may be on its way out. Or the power may not be getting to the drivetrain. Hmmm.

The ATK 5.9 replacement engine is actually about $200 cheaper than the 5.2. It says it takes about 16 hours to install the engine so I'm looking at around $1280 for the install + $2360 for the engine. That's not too bad.
