If you can sell it for a good price I'd say sell it. If you don't feel it's reliable enough than I wouldn't hesitate.

I have a pretty large commission check coming in August, which is what really got me thinking. Do I want to dump more money into the ZJ or should I just get a Wrangler? Right now the ZJ isn't reliable. The engine idles alright but but it needs brakes, both front CV axles (I have them) and front lower control arms (I have them too). I got under there yesterday and one of the old control arms will wiggle in my hand - it's that bad.
BUT my ZJ has no rust, so the body should be good to go for quite some time. Wranglers have the best resell value of a vehicle I can think of, I think the lowest ones in good condition are at least $8,000. But, even if I bought it for $8,000 I would inherit all of its problems and dump money into it. I really needed a larger 4x4 vehicle for my cabin in the winter - my Impreza can manage alright until the next snowfall, so I now have time.
So, after a long battle with my mind... I have decided to keep the ZJ. I like the hauling capacity and I need less than the cost of 2000 and newer Wrangler to get it in tip-top shape - far less than buying a Wrangler. I am going to put new brakes on and rebuild the transmission and engine, or maybe just put a new crate engine into it, I will let my mechanic decide that issue. It now has about 250,000 miles on it, so I'm curious if a rebuild will be worth it or if spending the $4,000 or so on a new engine install will be the better route. I'm also going to replace the water pump as well, since I don't know how long ago it was replaced and I want peace of mind. And, going to throw some Doug Thorley headers on to compliment my Kolak exhaust. I will just keep an old Huffy mountain bike at the cabin in case the Jeep wont start. Even a $90 tow 30 miles to the nearest mechanic and a night in a motel will still put me cheaper than buying a Wrangler.
BTW here's my cabin. Going to head up there, tomorrow, for the weekend.
