Jeep Grand Cherokee HELP with Tranny Problem..

I am unsure which model Jeep I have exactly. I am a chick, so you know how we are.. lol
I have an all time 4 wheel drive, Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo
Its a V8 5.2L Engine
The transmission is something like a 46RH... sound right??
Anyways here is my quick story...
the other day I was at a stop light..I started to go, and I thought I heard a clink noise (like if someone were to drop a bolt on the ground).. It could have just been something that was laying on the street & i just happen to run it over or something..or whatever... OR maybe it could have been something that came from my car.. that fell off or whatever..
So i continued to drive.. about 2 minutes later I hear some weird noise.. not sure exactly where it came from.. but i heard it a couple times.. then I hear some weird grinding sound.. it only lasted for a couple seconds.. But i decided to pull over just incase..
So i pulled over, and checked my fluids and stuff..everything seemed ok..
So I get back in the car, and am getting ready to drive off.. I put the thing in (D)Drive.. push the gas.. and NOTHING.. It wouldnt move.. It kind of acts like it is in Neutral or something...

Since it wouldnt move I decided to see if it would accelerate if I manually put it into 1st gear, and yes it did.. then I switched to 2nd, and it was still doing good... Then when it was time to switch it to (D)Drive, it shifted fine and was doing fine...
I had to stop... So once again I was still in (D) Drive, so I pressed the gas, and once again, it wont move..
So.. Seems to accelerate fine if I manually put it in 1st gear and shift that way. But when stopped, and when I try to accelerate from the normal (D)Drive.. It wont go...Like I said.. it feels like it thinks that it is in Neutral maybe..

Anyone know what the heck could be going on?? Could something really have fallen off my car, that would make it no longer wanna go while in (D)Drive?
I dunno.. Im a girl, so its kinda hard for me to explain this stuff.. lol
But if Anyone has a suggestion, as to what I should check first, or what I should look for, in order to know why its having this issue now...
I appreciate any feedback or input.. THANK U SO MUCH!!
Someone said something maybe about the Shift Solenoids or something...
Could that be the problem maybe??
Thanks for reading this and for your time...

You do know that you need to check the fluid level with the Jeep running, in neutral, and on level ground? Just checking.

Could be something as simple as part of the linkage fell off and messed up the adjustment. If you heard something metallic hit the ground, it might be something like that. Granted, there may be a solenoid on the outside of the transmission case, but I don't know why it would break off. And if it did, you'd probably loose fluid quickly. Have you crawled under there to see if anything is obviously hanging down where it shouldn't be, etc? Would you recognize if anything was out of place? If not, you'd best find a trustworthy mechanic, and have them take a look.

If you're considering doing some work yourself, at the very least invest the $20 or so in a digital copy of the Factory Service Manual for you year GC. You can find them on various online auction and retailers. The FSM will have illustrations that you can compare to what you may be seeing, and experiencing with your Jeep.

Or, if your Jeep is a ZJ (I'm pretty sure it is.), maybe post some pictures of what you're seeing underneath, etc., and post them on the ZJ message board here on JeepForum.com.
