Worst Jeep Mileage Ever?

Great site! I just bought a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo V8 with 145K miles on it. Had a tune-up last week. According to the console, I'm getting a measly 6.7 mpg in the city. I was expecting to get at least 12 to 14 mpg. Any ideas why it's so much lower than its e.p.a, and what I can do about it? I'm going to try Sea Foam next week, but I'm not very optimistic about it getting my mileage up to the rated levels. It's driving me nuts!

Reduce rolling friction using skinny tires.
Reduce the wheel rotating mass by using light weight rims.

Put in a 4 cylinder engine.

56 to 60 mpg improvement by putting on donuts just on the rear of car.

I feel really bad for you guys I look at double digits all day on highway around 27-32. But not so much in the city I go through gas really fast I have one hell of a lead foot.. spectra air filter autolite plugs. Oil change with treatment. And then once a year I do a seafoam cleaning in the brake booster vacuum hose... that's all I did. And mine is an inline 6 jeep wj so it may be a bit different in weight

As with any motor it's just a big air pump the more air you can get in and out the better of you'll be.

Motor is a big air pump, BUT more air in and out = more gasoline used.
That is due to the engine computer maintains the proper gas fuel to air ratio at 14 air to 1 gas.

Heavy foot open up the throttle means your pumping more air, more air in, more power, more gas used.

A restricted air filter means less air flow = less gasoline flow since computer controls fuel injection = better gas mileage but less power.

The oxygen sensor tells computer how to maintain proper stoichiometric ratio, and then it does.

Switch to manual seats, chuck the spare tire, remove the back seats, slide the roof racks all the way to the back and then pull the front driveshaft during the summer. Add a wash and wax and you'll get low/mid 20s.

You can also take plastic and streamline the undercarriage. Door trim strips on every edge to reduce drag, too.
