Thanks.

So, I used Duracoat Matte clearcoat on the rims after I coated them several times with VHT wheel paint. Anyway, the clearcoat cannot stand up to brake cleaner. When the tire guy sprayed the back of the rim some dripped onto the front and the runs ate through the clearcoat before the cleaner could dry. But...just a quick sand with a highgrit sandpaper, cleaning with soap and water, tack cloth, and quick whack with a layer of clearcoat made them look good as new. Took about 5 minutes.

The hitch mounted tire carrier serves 2 purposes. 1. It carriers my tire, 2. It protects my gas tank!

But...there is a down fall. I lost my rear recovery because I can't use the hitch. Maybe in a pinch I could pull from the base of the carrier but it sounds like a bad idea so...I am mounting rear shackle tabs. Pics coming...

+1, I like those shackle mounts, I don't think I have seen any one doing it like that before. Some details please!

Sweet C3R shackles! I have the same Knucklebone carrier and wanted to get those but I wasnt sure where to mount them. Looks Like I will have to give Mark a call. Any extra pics of how much plastic to trim?

Yeah, these are a set of the C3R shackle tabs for the WJ. Mark at Detours meant for them to be mounted pointing down towards the ground. I didn't like that idea because if you think about it, when you hook up to the shackles and pull a stuck WJ, the force on the shackles would create a twisting motion on the hitch. We originally decided to build them that way because we thought they would have to be much longer tabs if they point straight out of the bumper like I put them. Also, Mark was thinking that if he is going to mass market these, not many people would be willing to slice into their bumper.

Anyway, I mounted them pointed out from the bumper obviously. Minimal cutting was required but the tabs are not as secure as they could be. The tab is welded to a bracket that slides over the hitch. It is meant to sit in a U-shape which in my case would point the shackle down toward the ground and require zero cutting or at least only cutting that can't be seen. The U-shape bolts to the hitch with grade 8, 1/2" bolts supplied by Mark. I had to drill into the hitch using the C3R's as a guide. With his design the force would be put on the U-shape of the tab. When I pivoted mine to have them protrude from the bumper I turned that U-shape to a C-shape and now all the force from pulling will be on the bolts. This can be corrected if I weld the tabs onto the hitch. It's on the list to do someday so hopefully if I need them they hold up. I'm pretty confident in the grade 8 bolts.

This could also be corrected by having Mark weld the tab to the U-shape in a position to have them protrude from the bumper rather than point to the ground. I emailed him about what I did (I'm sure he's not thrilled) but I haven't heard back.

I decided to read a little to make sure I completely understand the capability of the bolts that are holding a lot of items together on the Jeep (Trailer hitch, hitch shackles, Fawkes system, tow hooks, winch plates, etc). Came across this and thought I would post it here for future reference of formulas in the article. From what I can see, it looks like the 1/2" grade 8's that are holding the shackle tabs have a shear strength of over 14K lbs. I think I'm safe.

1/2 Grade 8 bolts, properly torqued, have a shear strength of ~9K# each.

I'm debating on buying the poison spyder D30 cover (http://shop.poisonspyder.com/Dana-30.../42-10-030.htm) and a BTF D44a or getting both from BTF. Anyone have any thoughts?
