Exhaust

How much is an OEM tailpipe and muffler compared to an iro 3" pipe and super 44?

Silver. No muffler straight pipe out the side.

not sure...i would go with super 44 regardless...The extra cost would outweigh the cost of buying another stock exhaust

for me a magnaflow SS cat back ended up being about 30 bucks more than stock, (not that i was even considering stock regardless to cost but still was curious) plus the enjoyment and extra mpg will defiantly weigh it out

Flowmaster also makes a really nice 2 1/2" mandrel bent (1 piece as opposed to other's that are 2 piece) tail pipe for our ZJ's.

I've used Flowmaster several times and the quality is second to none.

It even comes with the rear hanger pre-welded to the pipe. I did have to drop my rear Track bar to install it though. It's nearly impossible to get it up in there without lowering the passenger side upper mount.

There is VERY little room for error in that area and it fits like a glove.

Just a comment about cats: I purchased my ZJ two years ago with 140k miles on it. It had a Magnaflow California universal-fit cat and a Magnaflow muffler. Nice sound, kind of a low throaty rumble. Now the ZJ has 160k miles. About a month ago I noticed a loud rattle coming from the cat, then the rattle would go away when the cat heated up. No big deal, I thought. Then it started rattling all of the time, and in a couple of days the engine lost power, wouldn't drive over 25 mph, and the throaty sound was gone. I had the cat replaced with a Magnaflow California direct fit. WHAT A DIFFERENCE, even over how it ran two years ago. The matrix in the old cat had broken up, moved around, and plugged up the cat. The owner of the shop said he has noticed that Jeeps are hard on cats. I don't know if that's true or not. Replacing a cat is expensive, especially here in California. If a cat is starting to get clogged, it would probably be a slow process that you wouldn't really notice (like shocks starting to wear out). But if your cat is old, you should give some thought to replacing it when upgrading the rest of your exhaust.

Walker makes OE replacement tailpipes in the stock 2.25" that are inexpensive. They are one-piece. As mentioned, the one-piece tailpipes are a lot more labor intensive to install, which is why I make my 3" tailpipes as a two-piece design for the ZJ.

Really depends what you're after - if you just want to repair an existing system and are not looking for more power, an OE type replacement would be the least expensive.

If you want more power or better economy, a 3" system would be best. I can put together my Kolak Exhaust with the Super 44 if you would like, and JeepForum members get 10% off my normal pricing. PM me for information.

not sure how bad it would be with a cat, but it so loud and unpleasant, had mine with a piece of pipe from the Y-pipe, for about a week, well i was waiting form my magna-flow to be shipped. and the novelty of a loud car wore off after a day or two, plus it probably wasn't legal. and without any backpressure below about 70 degrees it was hard to start and keep running, it sounded like my boat

Definitely very, very loud. I just got rid of my OEM muffler, and replaced it with a Cherry Bomb, way too loud too drive everyday without anything after the cat. That would've gotten old after the first day or so. Not too mention the fact that it's probably illegal in 95% of the US.

i am also considering this no muffler mod. on my 4.0 zj....
i live in sc so it`s ok here for me to remove my muffler.
i talked to my local muffler shop. he has done all the muffler work for the last 20 years.he told me he would come out of my newer cat with the same size pipe all the way out the rear of my zj. he told me it would sound fine and not be overly loud...i trust him....

It's actually like an 1/8" or 1/16" clearance AND does rub and make noise off track bar for the 1st few minutes after initial morning start up

I have a 4.0ZJ running just a factory cat, and 2.25" pipe off the cat and it exits out the side, no muffler or anything, just straight pipe off the cat. I love it, sounds great, has a nice deep rumble, and sounds aggressive when I get on it. Made a little performance difference, especially with the intake, noticed a slight increase. As i stated my current set-up runs out the side right in front of the rear passenger wheels, but my plan is to upgrade to a magnaflow hi-flow cat, and run dual side-exit pipes, one out each side in front of the rear wheels with nice chrome tips. My reasoning for not running a muffler is the space issue for my setup, there's not enough from to run the cat, the muffler and dual 90 degree bends for the side exits, would just be too long to exit in front of the wheels. So, i settled on straight pipe and have no complaints, only cost me $5 bucks for the piece of pipe, over $80-$100 for a FM or other.

Anyone have any feedback or opinions on the Kolak exhaust? Anyone used it before? I would be very interested to try it out! Just wanna hear what people have to say..

You can go to youtube and see lots of clips. Also do a Google search and you'll find many writeups. Many thousands of Jeepers all over the planet are running my setup. And it all started 13 years ago when I helped one Jeeper by the name of Dave DiMartini with his exhaust - I wasn't even thinking about getting into this business at the time.
