Keep the Moabs. Everyone and thier brother has Soft 8's now.

As for your next tires, I recomend the Cooper S/T. I had 2 sets on my ZJ, in 245/75/16, and I loved them. Great on and off the road, and for as agressive as they look, they were really quiet onroad. Nowhere near the noise that my STT's make. I actually wouldn't mind going back to them. I found they did very well in rocks and loose soil, and even in mud, for a non-mud tire. They're an agressive AT, or what's been called a hybrid tire lately.

When I got my tires slashed when I was on vacation about 5 years ago, I ended up having to get a set of Mastercraft Courser A/T's to replace the S/T's. I wasn't very happy, they were nowhere near as agressive as the S/T's I had on it, but I was stuck and had to get home. I thought Ok, well at least the ride will be quieter/smoother and maybe my mpg will go up a bit. NOPE. I noticed not one bit of difference on the ride home with the much milder tire.

For a DD that sees only limited offroad use, but needs a tough look, IMO those tires are hard to beat.

The new GY Duratrac is a contender too, IMO. They seem to be the new JF favorite.

Those duratac's do seem to be the new official tire. Honestly the reason to get rid of the Moabs is purely financial. Selling them would finance a set of soft 8's and half a new set of tires. But you are right Soft 8's are to common I may hang on to them.

Keep in mind the additional strain that you'll be putting on your drivetrain by adding 15 pounds to each corner if you go with the soft 8's. Way better to stick with the Rubi's.

This is why I wish I stayed with alloys...my ProComp D-windows looks great, but I feel like they helped kill the mileage and power. My next set of tires are going to be metric on my stock wheels...maybe another 245/75, or even a 235/85.

I have considered that. I went from Moabs with 245/75R16’s on my TJ to BFG 32x11.5x15’s KM1’s on Soft 8’s. The Moabs with tires weighed 55lbs, the Soft 8’s with tires weighed 88lbs. Granted that’s an inch and a half larger tire but 33lbs? Like I said my largest motivator would be that I could probably sell 5 Moabs with the current tires on them and pay for half or more of a new wheel and tire package on Soft 8’s. But honestly I’d probably just regret that….as previously stated this is the 3rd set of Moabs I’ve owned. It's safe to say I love them......I’ve run them on every Jeep I’ve had but 2. So I’ll probably just keep them. I’m like you Mike, I love the look of the 235/85’s but seems like I can’t find much that’s less than 10 ply. That is certainly the downside to 16” wheels. My recent tire decision was completely money driven and I couldn’t touch a decent mud tire for less than $800 that didn’t have 10 ply’s. This summer a larger lift is going on and if I can find a set I might try to go for the new 17” Moabs. Who knows.

Thanks man. The answer is….possibly. Virtually the same day I put the rack on, I put my new bumper on. So I do have a slightly elevated level of wind noise coming from somewhere. Whether it’s the changed air flow patterns from the front bumper or it’s the rack…..I’m not sure. But when I say slightly I do mean slightly, so if I were considering one I wouldn’t even let that be a deciding factor. I doubt most people would notice it. I will throw in my opinion of the rack though. It's one of those things that sort of is what it is. If you have to put a tire on the roof I suppose it's the best possible design. But let me tell you it won't be easy getting off. To get mine on I had to basically roll the tire up the side of the vehicle, open the passenger door and climb up onto the roof. Stand up on the roof and an awkward 55lb tire+wheel you ain't lifting from your knees. Then lift the tire up and sit it down over the 12" long threaded rods that come up through 2 of the lug nut holes. I say it is what it is because that's basically how it has to be done if you want it on the roof. So it's not a design flaw by Kevin and the guys. If I had my choice I'd have it on the bumper. But that's the reason it's $150 instead of an $800 bumper tire carrier combo. At some point in the future I'll get a bumper and mount it to that. But I will keep the Kevins Tire mount up there and just saw off the tire mount threads. Tire or no tire it still makes a great place to mount a highlift and ax or shovel.

Since you asked I'm starting from the beginning. They came on 03-06 Jeep Wrangler Rubicons. They do not come in chrome although there is a machined version (unpainted) that I think came on the 06's but don't quote me on that. The new tires are Cooper Discovery ATR's, 245/75-16. If you at post #63 or older they are the tires that come on the Rubicon Wranglers, Goodyear Wrangler MTR's in size 245/75-16.

After seeign your Jeep (which is pure sex) I am going to try to find me some Moabs.. Either in the alloy finish like you have or in high polished aluminum

One more question, these are a direct bolt on to our ZJ?? Meaning no spacer is required, just bolt them on and go??????

Wait one more question where did you get the Skyjacker shocks? How much? I just ordered a 2" BB lift and need shocks now. How do you like them?

Thanks

-Jonas

Pure sex....I like that.

Direct bolt on as long as you get the ones from a TJ, the 03-06. If you get Moabs from a JK 07-10 they are the 5 on 5 pattern and require adapters.

I got mine from Ebay. I like them, ran Skyjackers on my TJ to. They are a good shock for the money. I paid 139 from Ebay. I just typed in "ZJ shock" and chose the ones for 0-3" of lift.

Doogie your jeep is bad a** I love the Moabs and the front bumper is that a IOR bumper? You want to trade your moabs for my canyons, c'mon you know you wanna they are already painted and everything.

I'd love to get some moabs when I get new tires and have them powder coated black or dark grey like I have now.

The bumper is an RLC Welding. My review thread is here: Click Me

Thanks man, although to me it just seems like a dead basic build....nothing special. Heck I love yours...it's super clean.

Don't you have a brand new set of KM2's? So my brand new tires on my 5 Moabs for your painted Canyons and new KM2's? Hmmmmmm......

Hey Doogie....

Going from stock 15s, to 16x7s wheels with 245/75/16 tires, did that throw off your speedometer?

Stock 15" wheels with 225/75/15s are 28.29" diameter and a 245/75/16 tire is 30.47" diameter...

Did you buy the plastic speedo gear? And being a bigger tire, almos 30.5" did your gas mileage go down?
