Dodge 242 D (HD) & 231 D (HD) transfer case options.

Thought I'd start a thread about what I have found out about the 98-04 Dodge Durango/Dakota 242 D (HD) & 231 D (HD) Transfer Case to keep info in one place.

Thought it might be helpful for those trying to find a 242 HD since the Jeep 242 HD is scarce and the Dodge ones are more common and usually cheaper.

231 D is in second post.

I have included some pics too.

First it looks exactly like a Jeep 242 HD (V8).

Has aluminum tail cone, 32 spline rear output shaft, electrical connector on top and shift lever on side.

The only thing I couldn't find while looking at the JY was the input shaft length and chain size.

But while I was at a pic m pull in Oregon I found one pulled and it had a short input shaft like a Jeep 242 LD (I6).

Also found specs on the Dodge 242 D (HD).

This is a New Transfer Case Chain for a Dodge Np 242/244
Fits 1998-2004 Durango's with Full Time NP242 or NP244 Transfer Case

The Jeep 242 HD (V8) specs..

Number of links: 49

Width: 1-1/4"

So theoretically a 242D from a dodge should fit into a WJ with a v8, correct? Because if so, the dodge 242s are everywhere at my picknpull, and they are usually dirt cheap since theres so many. The wj 242hd, not so much.

Yes I believe so. You would have to swap the input shaft though since the WJ 242HD V8 uses a longer one than the 242D (HD) V8. Also you still need the rear drive shaft and would have to check the length.

A benefit is all the 242D's I have seen have the U joint yoke on the front TC output. This could also let you upgrade the front drive shaft too if the length is right.

If you do this let us know so others can try it or not too.

Same thing (swap input shaft) except rear drive shaft spline should be the same as the one you got now and not the 32 spline like the HD's.

Doesn't the 247 with a v8 have the 32 spline as well? Or am I wrong

edit: Nevermind, I read that wrong. I see what you are saying.
