The 4.0 isn't that picky about oil. What grade of M1 have you been using? The 0W-40, or 5W-40 TDT would work fine in the 4.0, as would the Rotella 5W-40 and a few others.

I've been using 10w-30 and if the change happens to fall on a winter date I'll do 5w-30, which is what I just picked up today. I've been using the high mileage cus I hear it's got extra zinc

I've basically run Mobile 1 Full Synthetic 10w-30 High Mileage since I can remember!

Edit: Nice video there, looks like fun, and you soaked that other car!

If it's not much more, I'd step up to the 0W-40 (M1 0W-40 is considered one of their best). It's on the thinner end of the 40 range (not that the 4.0 minds a 40 at all). But, being a 40, the limits on zinc and such are higher, as it's not a resource conserving oil.

That's what my dad runs in the Mercedes, you sure mine would be fine with a 0w?

I'd be hesitant until I hear about that people with the 4.0 say who have actually ran it... I do not like being the person to "try it out" sometimes!

0W just means it's thinner when cold than a 10W-40 (better for cold winters). A 0W-40, 5W-40 and 10W-40 are all pretty close to the same thickness when hot. In other words, it's fine. I've thought about it for the 5.9, but the Rotella 5W-40 seems to be doing well, and is easier to find around here.

Im looking at the 5-40 cus it'll be happier in the winter, also I wanna keep synthetic versus the weird blend stuff. I hear the rotella has Higher detergent levels, is this gunna eat away at old gunk and sludge and cause any problems? I'd like to not have to deal with a 500mi oil change till summer.

I've been using the T6 5W-40. Assuming your engine isn't totally gross inside (probably not, 4.0s aren't hard on oil), then it shouldn't loosen up much gunk. Plus, while the detergent levels are higher, they're not dramatically higher.

They do sell by the quart in some places, but it's harder to find and more expensive overall. For me, the gallons work perfectly. 3 gallons changes my ZJ and mom's WJ with about a quart left over. Using the small filter on the 4.0, you should be able to do 2 changes on 3 gallons.

IOW, you've gotta buy 2 gallons the first time, but probably only need 1 the next time.
