So im pretty sure I need to replace my ring and pinon, im debating on trying to do it myself, I dont have much experience rebuilding diffs, but want to learn, would need the master rebuild kit, I got a quote at $250. Still trying to get prices on salvage axles. any thoughts?

Looks like I may have to hold off on my moabs.

Which diff? I've no experience here myself, but I'm wondering. $250 doesn't sound too bad, but then it doesn't sound too good either. What would you need, tool-wise, to do the rebuild yourself? How many miles are on your Jeep? Moabs are a want. Jeeps keep us on our toes with needs. Something always 'needs' to be fixed. I'd laugh if it wasn't so sad.

Its the front axle, jeep has 114387 miles. I think it requires a press and other various tools, most can be rented. Its been years since I have done any major diff work and that was on a 12 bolt rear that was under an el camino. Im a little nervous about doing it with the vari loc front, still I want and need to learn how to rebuild them.

I know what you mean, my vehicles are definitely woman, they always want my attention, drive the jeep for a week and the car wont start, drive the car for a week jeep wont start, lol, true story. they always want something from me, then I have my woman, its amazing when I find time for myself, but thats overrated any how

Well I had one heck of a weekend, went out wheeling at a local spot down at the river and found a guy with a big chevy truck half sunk stuck in the river (still cant figure out what he was thinking), me being the nice guy I ageed to try and give him a pull, pulled on him twice and I got stuck in the soft sand, had a friend come out in his wj to give me a pull, his little 4.0 just couldnt do it only got me more sunk, the water was only an inch or so under the sand so it got wet quick, also had a chevy pull on me and almost got out with his pull but he was short on time and left after two pulls, another few pulls from the 4.0 and I just sunk deeper, it was like quick sand, long story short I ended up sitting in water over my front bumper, it ended up takeing about 100ft of cable and chain run from the rear of my jeep to a large tree atop a large hill a $70 dollar 2000lb reciver hitch walmart special winch (that did surprisingly well) a come along and about 24hrs of being stuck on the river with mabbe an hour of sleep. Sometimes it doesnt pay to be a nice guy. Never did get the guys truck all the way out, he had water in his oil. Wish I had more pics for im sure I could make it on a worse stuck contest, lol. all in all I came out ok, two bent tow hooks and a bunch of river water in the floor boards, things could have been allot worse, still waiting for it to dry out to test and check all the electrical. One thing is for sure I dont think ill be going back there

Only pic with my jeep in it you can see the chevy that tried to pull me out aswell as the stuck one.

Guys truck after being turned 90 and out of the deep hole

And how we left his truck, you can see my hole in middle top right. I was so happy to be out

His truck has 9in lift and 35in tires so you know the hole he drove into was deep, dmmy. I cant say much, I was the dummy that got stuck trying to pull him out

Next time use a longer rope/tow strap and don't get that far into the water yourself. Or realize the limitations of your Jeep. I understand that we never know until it happens though. Been there, done that. Of course, we have no water where I am. So I've only snow stuck my Jeep. LOL Oh but that was interesting. 3-4 times in one day. It was a bad winter. I loved it...

It's great that you got it out of the hole and nothing major is wrong. I'd check your diff fluid again, but you mentioned changing it in my build thread. Still, check the tranny and oil while you're at it.

I had a 30ft strap and I was on a sand bar when I started, that quickly turned to water. I wheel out there all the time and never had any problems, im a pretty smart and carefull wheeler it was just a bad spot and they kept begging for my help and had kids with them (got the kids out and a ride home first thing) but ill be more cautious for sure. I miss my colorado trails, Im more of a crawler than a mudder, and texas has few good places for crawling, at least were im at. Looks like ill be making more trips to bridgeport.
Oil and trans fluid look just fine, was the first thing I checked when I got out, will inspect diffs and transfer case tomorrow.

Shes almost all dried out and everything seems to be ok, my abs light is on but my friend that has a dub said his did the same thing when he sunk his and it went away, and my drivers seat doesn't want to move yet, got the water out of the connetors but im sure the motor still has to dry up a bit. what an experience, dont think I want to ever do it again, im sure ill get stuck again, it happens, but im sure it wont be in a river. My poor jeep, I feel so bad. Oh well s#!+ happens.

on a happier note, I have a package or two that should be in tomorrow that im vary excited about

Yeah they are the premium sliders. I like them so far, pretty easy install, only thing I would recommend for anyone who gets them would be to ditch the self tapping screws for the mounting arms and drill and tap some holes for some real bolts. I tryed two of the selp tappers and didnt hold well, other than that its a great kit and looks good.
