For those of you that don't already know, my E4OD trans in my tow rig developed some terminal problems on the way back from Moab. I can still drive it around, but the torque converter locks up just after getting rolling in first gear and stays locked. It is barely able to move itself around, let alone perform any tow duties. Tonight I picked up a donor rig with an ATS turbo non wastegate (older Garrett style), ZF5 and R134a conversion. Too bad it wasn't a F350 with a D60 in the front.
I'll let him know! He is actually thinking of building an Exploder or Mountaineer with a 5.0 to run 37's.
EDIT: Will you be swapping the motor/trans together, or just pulling the turbo off of the truck and installing that along with the gear box in your rig? Esentially, will there be a functional diesel engine with a compatibale computer when you are done?
There will be a functioning IDI minus the turbo. I don't know if the engine is an original turbo or NA, but I will know soon. The IDI has no computer control, it's injection system is mechanical. I am pulling the turbo, Trans, AC system and other small non mechanical parts. The rest of the truck is available.
The ol' truck will be ready to tow the WJ around soon. The auto tranny has started working somewhat properly agian, so I have a little time before the ZF5 goes in. Anyone in northern Utah have a transmission jack I can borrow?
Took the family camping at Dinosaur National Monument over the weekend. Three kids in the back and every other space packed with gear for the 600 mile round trip. It wasn't a very technical trip, but the first real road trip with the WJ since the LA's two years ago. Normally it rides along behind the Ford.
Arrived at camp
Parked at Echo Park with Steamboat Rock in the background
Sounds like a fun trip! I haven't been there since I was a kid.

It's a Jeep, it's not supposed to work right all the time.
There are before and after pictures on page 8 of this thread. It was a two stage process, first with 33's than again with 35's for more clearance around the back of the headlights. A jigsaw worked great for me. Good luck!
