Chris, where did you say that you ordered your TC spacers from? Im probably going that same route

ps.. looking forward to the excellent driving skills videos!!

Here is a link. If I did it again, I'd go with the longest bar that would fit, not just the length of the skid flange. It may help reduce damage like I sustained on Rock Chucker.

Thanks for the link So let me make sure I understand you right.. if the skid flange is 12" long (just an example) you would suggest ordering like 14 or 15 inches (or whatever fits) and using the extra length for damage protection? so having the extra length towards the rear of the vehicle.

Edit.. should have looked at yours better last weekend i guess

Here are the damages from rock chucker and what I am planning on doing to minimize it next time (besides moving a few large rocks).

Bent passenger side IRO skid




The unibody rail is slightly dented in from the interior edge of the 1"x2" aluminum I used as a spacer. I plan on reinforcing the rail with a 1/2" x 24" piece to match the rail width (held in place with the IRO skid bolts and one new additional location on each side) and a shorter 1/2"x4"x16" to mount the skid to for additional cat/tc clearance. The damage is a lot less than I expected to see when I pulled the skid.

Would a wider bar help too? Width of the "frame" rail?

If you read the text, it basically says the same thing in a few more words. My 'word smith' skills are pretty poor lately. One piece of 1/2x5 for support and a new piece of 1/2x4 to make up the remainder of the spacer needed.

Have you considered wheeling a vehicle with an actual frame? I've heard a lot about them, especially from people who don't go wheeling ...

I was thinking about selling the WJ to a chick that works in a kiosk at the mall, I figure it will be happy there. Maybe I'll buy a Taco for wheelin'...

Straightened out the IRO skid as well as I could and gave it a fresh coat of tan bedliner.


The 0.5x5 aluminum bar is ready to go on to add a little extra support to the area the skid bolts to. Still waiting on a few remaining pieces before installing everything.


I will pull the front end apart later this weeekend to see what is making the most recent clunking noise. I am pretty sure it is not from tie rod ends being worn out...

Reinstalled the skid and 0.5" spacer to check for clearance. The TC has plenty of clearance, but the CAT interferes a little. I am going to have an exhaust shop do a little work for me instead of adding another 0.5".


Set the front end up on jackstands and found a bad hub assembly on the passenger side. Not too bad of life for the stock assembly. 90k miles on the clock with ~65k having some level of lift. I can almost taste the red dust again, can't wait until Thanksgiving!

That looks solid, it should distribute the weight perfectly. If you bend the unibody with this, it might be time to plate the unibody
