cherokee 5.9 front drive shaft

I'm wondering if there is any other year of front drive shaft that will fit my 1998 5.9 cherokee limited

First things first, you have a 1998 ZJ Grand Cherokee, not a 1998 FSJ Cherokee.

I'm assuming it still has the rezeppa (CV) joint at the axle end correct? Any ZJ with the same set up as yours (249 Transfercase and CV driveshaft) should work.

pull the sensor thingy, rotate it 90* untill the gears contacts the shaft...

The only exception is the earlier, late model 95's with the 46RH trans , anything after the production date 11-1-1995 with a V8 should be a match . I think the earlier ones were a little longer IIRC

I had a hard time finding one to fit, so I found one out of a XJ with u-joint ends, and had it shortened. Total cost was about 80 bucks.

thanks a lot. and I'm guessing the previous owner took the drive shaft out to safe gas i hope. Is it bad on my tranny running it 2wd with the 249 still in it? eventually ill do the 242 swap

Chances are , he did it because the VC is bad (search that one for info). No harm to the trans . You might need that 242 swap sooner than you think .

You should be able to find a 242 for less than 100 bucks to do a swap. It took me a few tries to get it right, but it wasnt that hard if you dont need the jeep for a day or 2
