You need to get a better pattern on there. Can't tell anything from what you have there...

I have the FSM, and iv got the yukon books that came with the gears that show acceptable patterns. Mine seems to be good, but figured Id get others opinions as well.

well, my buddy who has rebuild ~14 D44a's (and ~150 axles total) says I've got a good pattern and my BL is about perfect (he likes to set his at .004 though).

Well IMHO it looks to deep and the paint does not show enough contact ... i am by no means an expert though.

Pattern Looks good. a tiny tiny tiny bit on the shallow pinion depth. but if it was me id would leave it as is.

how much did the regearing stuff cost you. im looking to regear my soon when i get my 33's and looking for estimates

I was thinking it may be a little deep if anything.

Ill break it down for you:

- D44a and Hp30 Yukon master install kits $222 shipped
- D44a 4.56 Yukon gears ~$260 shipped
- HP30 4.56 Yukon gears ~$140 shipped
- Dial indicator $30
- In/lb BEAM STYLE torque wrench ~$50 shipped
- 1 5/16" socket ~$20

I think that's about everything

^sounds good

cleaned up the gear teeth and removed all excess marking compound and ran the pattern again. With the excess compound removed, the gear pattern looks much better and I am very happy with the results

Drive side:

This area was not originally marked with the compound, but was covered by some left over from the pinion

and coast side:

got to work on the hp30 a little bit. Started with stock shim sizes and couldn't even turn the pinion when meshed with the carrier, lol. Played around with some different combos. Started to get a decent pattern but had NO backlash whatsoever. So I loosened it up a little bit and got this

Spec calls for .005-.009, it's on the tight side, which I prefer (no pun intended)

but heres the thing: I was thinking, and I came up with a question. The question was, what is considered the drive and coast pattern on a front axle gear setup thats reverse rotation? It was messing with me a little bit and I couldn't figure it out (tired). I just assumed that when spinning the gears (simulating the Jeep in drive/forward), the side of the gear getting "pushed" is the drive..Correct? So in the case of an hp30, it would be the opposite of the 44a gears. Am I right to assume that or am I overthinking this?

to put images to words, heres some pics, with patterns..

Coast (?) side:

Drive (?) side:

somebody correct me if I am wrong and I will edit my post so I dont confuse anybody. How do those look to you guys?

Also, use less paint in the future. You only need to paint a couple teeth. That way if you don't get the pattern right on the first few tries there is some ring gear left to see the new pattern on. Likewise less paint then what you put on will make it easier to get a readable pattern out of it

Only prep I did was to clean the woodgrain with soap and water. Then I used rustoleum Auto primer to prime (probably the last thing you would expect ) then I used a couple coats of Krylon Fusion Black

oh ok thanks for the advice. Believe it or not I only painted 3-4 teeth on my ring gear, then painted another 3-4 on the other side. Musta gone a little overboard with the marking compound

made a post on MC, feel free to make any input
