but yes theyr the right seal. they fit in their perfectly.
napa p/n NOS18108...i know that off the top of my head sadly.. go look it up yourself

factory seal on the left. the 2 right ones are from napa
the inner lip is being chewed away

that bearing is brand new (in the tailcone that is)
as is the tailcone.
because i did this to the last one, by accident, trying to get the slinger off

it wasnt. i was just about to put that one in. i was just taking a comparison pic amongst the three.
i believe that third one did the same as the first 2. then the 4th is the one that held, but i destroyed it trying to take the slinger off.
the slinger is this little *****

Remind me not to let you anywhere near my Jeep with any kind of tool!

From looking at the first picture of the current tail cone, and the seal, the seal shouldn't be anywhere near the bearing. looks like a decent amount of space there. your saying there is a clip between the bearing and seal? What for? isnt the bearing pressed in from the other side?


Your oiling that seal up good before you slip it on right?

i was mad cuz my mom was sitting there ripping me a brand new one about god knows what and i swung twice with a hammer and missed the piece i was using to try and dislodge it, and cracked that thing. needless to say i was hitting that thing real hard.

there is a gap.
on the tailshaft there are slight groves that, where the diameter is thinner than the rest of the tailshaft in general. your supposed to put 2 lock rings in those grooves. the first groove is right up against the bearing, when you put a lock ring in that grove, it holds the tailshaft from moving forward and backward.
the second grove is just on the outside of the seal, i believe you put a lockring there to hold the seal in place (as if it needs anything to hold it in place, that SOB goes on TIGHT). but that is also the same that chews up the inner lips of the seal if you do not put the lockring on the groove closest to the bearing.
the first 3 times i did not even realize this and never put the lockrings back on.

and yes i dip a napkin into some atf and coat the seal with it

yea, thats the little dust cap thing for the seal.

now, when you look at that thing again, look to see if you buggered up the shaft when you took that thing off. maybe there is a bur or nick there that is slicing the seal when your installing it and messing the seal up before it is even run. then make sure the area where the seal rides is nice and smooth. Just stupid stuff but hey.

I cant find a diagram of that external slip yoke yet on google. I have the internal so I cant compare for you.

Is there supposed to be some sort of washer between the last clip and the seal? doesn't make sense to have a seal ride against the clip like that.

check this out...

If you type in "NP242 external slip yoke" into google, look at the first picture! thats my case!

anyway, John, look at that picture real good. #30 and #33 are the two clips were talking about right. one looks like an outer clip and the other in an inside clip. so the small one would go up against the bearing and around the shaft, and the larger one would be on the inside of that tail housing up against the seal. and that part of the seal isnt moving so that clip isnt the problem.
