If it's going to save a decent amount I would too. If you don't mind me asking where is the guy located that did the machining to your knuckles? Just wondering incase this is something that I want to do at some point.

Well, I guess I have enough stuff to finally update you guys. Brown Santa has been nice at my house this year!

Got myself a new oil pan for my spare 42RE (old one was all rusty and flaking):



Finally got to replace my old, rusty and seized front shafts with these nice 35 spline Nitro 4340 inners:







My first time using Amsoil. Figured I'd give it a shot.



These are Enduro Joints from Barnes4WD. These things are beef! Great price, too!







Here is the SpynTec hub conversion for my D60. Goodbye expensive unit bearings! Definitely a nice quality kit.







Finally got around to replacing the S10.5 diff cover that I sold to TJSWJ. Another nice piece from BTF.



And saving the best for last...I give you the crown jewel of my drivetrain:







Specs on my Atlas 2 Speed transfer case:
  • 3.8:1 Low Range
  • F/R 32 spline outputs
  • SHORT 23 SPLINE INPUT SHAFT
  • F/R 1350 CV yokes
  • ZJ/XJ electronic speedo

I think that's it for the Atlas. I'd also like to reiterate that the short 23 spline input on the Atlas will work with the 42RE. I've had a hell of a time trying to find that answer.

I've got a pair of 35 spline Nitro 4340 stub shafts coming in the coming weeks to go with my hub conversion. That way I can keep the OE shafts that came with the Spyntec kit as trail spares. Steering is the next big thing I need to figure out...

Nice! Look at the ruff stuff steering kit. It is 1 ton and can either do heims or tre. I just ordered it for my 44 swap and it is nice and beefy.

X2 im planning on using rufftstuff for my steering as well. They also have a 20% off sale right now. Cupon code festivus is good until January1st on current inventory. Its first come first serve so get on it lol.

X3 on ruff stuff, I've been running the TRE version on my 44 since I swapped it in and it's super stout. Easy to set up and the TREs are quality as well.

Well, it's more a matter of full hydro or not. I've had a 1 ton TRE crossover steering setup from Ballistic for a while now. I plan on moving up to 40s one day and don't know if hydro assist could keep up. Thinking about just getting an upgraded pump kit from PSC and running regular steering with assist. Full hydro would require me to get an aftermarket steering wheel and move my cruise control buttons. I'd also feel better with the hydro assist if my wife ever drove it.

Also, going full hydro would require trailing it everywhere. Can the chevy cruise handle that? :-)

Im jealous of your atlas. I need some lower gearing. Hydro assist will keep up with 40s no prob. Esp if you add the hydro fan pump, if you don't already have it. I could use a larger reservoir with my set up but other than that i have no problems, and its got a lot of use this summer. I don't know if full hydro is illegal everywhere or how unsafe it is to drive but it would be something to consider. I think about it a lot, it would make axle placement much easier not having to worry about staying behind your pitman arm and geometry of your drag link, plus boxes wear out with the type of wheeling we do, even with hydro assist they are bound to fail. It would be a tough choice for me if i did it all again.

Yea, I'm thinking if I get the upgrade pump kit from PSC to go with my West Texas Offroad modded box it should keep up fine. I've read a lot about the steet-ability of full hydro and it doesn't seem that bad with the right set of matched parts. And there is no inspections here in Alabama, so I don't have to worry about that. Like you said, it definitely makes for easy axle placement which was a big reason why I was wanting to do it. However, I do plan on driving this thing quite a bit on the road and would know that I'd absolutely be alright with assist. Whereas on the other hand, driving and having a line break on full hydro (which I know is unlikely with good crimped lines, but still).

I'll just go assist and run it. If I decide to go full hydro one day, I'll already have a good pump...

I remember reading a thread on a different forum about a guy getting killed from being ejected from his wj after something in his hydro steering broke causing his jeep to roll. It's just something to think about.

Yea, that build was over on Pirate. I don't know if it was 100% determined if it was his steering or not. But, I don't think he was buckled in either...

IIRC being ejected and crushed by the jeep is what killed him, but it wasnt ever determined what caused the accident.

The only thing I dont like about full hydro steering is no sense of feel, as well as no return to center. If you ever find yourself in a sliding situation, you wont know where exactly your wheels are pointed which can easily lead to a over correction resulting in a crash.
