Goin back at it! I pulled all the gears out and got things ready for the cryoer today, finished up the notch in the TB mount for the tie rod, painted the D60 and started to modify the kingpin caps.
At Andy's request I'll be welding the steering arms to the knuckles, and I told him the only way i'd do it was if we kept everything 100% serviceable. This is what I came up with, I think it'll work pretty well. On the right you have the OEM setup, on the left you have the one I'm making. I cut the base off the cap, opened it up and slid them back together making it so it mounts on top of the steering arm. Just gotta make sure the height is correct and burn it all together. The axle will be going under the truck and knuckles going on for good soon
I KNOW ABOUT THE STUDS lol
Well the front 60 housing is under the jeep attatched to the radius arms, all the gears are out ready for cryo, the modified kingping caps are done and the steering arms are welded to the knuckles. Now I've just got to plate the crap out of them and call it good!
One of the main supports I'm putting in. Just a rough estimate, but I'm thinking 1/4" for it and have a peice of 1/2" plate spanning between the oem tie rod location and the steering arm at the end of this gusset, just to make sure. I'm thinking i'll be leaving the factory tie rod hole accessible as a "just in case" that we never want to experience.
There's gunna be plenty of plating to disperse the loading across the knuckle. Having that plate welded in I was holding in the pics will transmit a lot of the force down into the original tie rod area of the knuckle, also helping. All in all it should be rock solid when I'm done
mmm I think that piece was from Blue Collar Supply, a local industrial supply store. I feel like it was like $80-100 for a 55"x50" piece (and it was actually .23" instead of .25", so a little bit lighter). I also have a local steel supply place that has pretty much every kind of steel you could imagine (got everything for my torchmate table from them), and if you get remnants they sell by the pound.
Plasma cutters are the BEST lol!
Reid getting the same plating
I'm even happier with these welds than I was on the last knuckle!
and then I painted them RED for Andy, once the paint dries they can go on the housing!
