4x4Jeep's build thread..
finally decided to make one...i bought my 2001 jeep Grand Cherokee with 84,600 miles on it in July '10 for about $8000, but had to finance it. came with a 2 year/24k mile warranty...saved me hundreds of $ in repairs. been paying $240/month and have about 1.5 years left. this one is my 2nd Jeep, i had a '93 XJ i owned a few years back, but never wheeled it. it broke down on me had had to sell it. would buy another one if i could.

my plans are...3" IRO, 30" or 31" tires, AEV oil pan skid, KC driving lights, 16" JK steel wheels, IRO TC skid, and if i get a winch i'll get a custom built winch plate into the brush guard. it's my daily driver for now, and wheel it at least once a month, sometimes more.

this is the day i bought it...last time it was that clean:D

the only thing i bought for it was a k&n air filter

August '10 i took it to Ocala NF for the 1st time to see what it could do.

that November '10 i drove to Upstate NY (Catskill's) to go backpacking for a week, then drove to Long Island to visit family. put a couple thousand miles on it, never gave me trouble.
upstate NY
parked behind another WJ

sold my hood deflector, got tired of the look. also sold my 10 disc cd changer, i didn't use it much.

at this time i was still new to off roading and didn't know anyone who was into that. i would occasionally go wheeling by myself.

4x4Jeep 03-10-2012 12:27 PM

bought Jeep seat towels instead of custom seat cover cause of the huge price difference..they do get annoying but come in handy.

got some Husky floor liners front/rear. then i bought a used Husky liner for the cargo area, from someone on JF.

in January 2011 i took a trip to N. FL to go canoeing for a few days

bought the Mopar (OEM) front tow hooks and removed the ugly mud flaps

finally found some people (no jeeps though) to go wheeling with, we met at a gas station and rode out there together, a place called 5a, which in the spring/summer it is flooded with mud holes.
got stuck
after i got home

no one there could believe what my wj did with it being all stock, including myself.

since then i had installed a rear tow hook

reached 100k miles

another time, same area...went with a twin WJ (sohcvtec1995)
and of course i got stuck

this time i wasn't so lucky, after that day been having tranny problems. i don't make much money so the jeep sat in my driveway for almost 6 months before getting it fixed. too much money to rebuild the trans. so ended up putting a used one in. got one with about 50k miles on it installed for $1500 w/ a 6 month warranty.

while it was sitting for months...i bought a new battery, lightly tinted my taillights..

cleaned the TB

put in new headlights

4x4Jeep 03-10-2012 12:27 PM

after i got the heep running again i was so anxious to get it dirty took it in some mud at night and ended up braking the steering stabilizer, then when i was being pulled out, my bumper got hooked up on something and ripped it completely off along with the grille.

decided to buy a limited style grille and paint it the body color and paint the chrome trim black.

met up with some other Jeeps and went to Ocala NF
britheman's zj
MrJ's dub
stuck in sugar sand
some mud holes

i bought a brush guard off craigslist for $80, bought a cb, and painted the grille silverstone metallic to match my jeep.

that last trip i met someone who welds (billyzj) and since i like the look of the brush guards, but it takes the front tow hooks away, he fabbed up a way to have both.

we bolted to steel plates where you would normally mount the tow hooks to. and mounted the brush guard to them

then welded d-rings to the bottom plates

Uniden PRO505xl and a 4' Firestik Firefly
used a dodge ram hood mount

also bought new dash speaker/tweeters...sound great
new vs old

some wheeling shots

then i bought a 2" bb off ebay $90 shipped, and a Rancho steering stabilizer
found it too difficult to install myself i had some help from some buddies.
bottomed out after the 2" boost

4x4Jeep 03-10-2012 01:37 PM

some more shots since my latest mods

about 2 weeks ago my transmission went again. engine would rev, but wouldn't go anywhere.
took it back to the same shop cause of the warranty they said it was a shift solenoid and replaced it. was driving home, about half way it got stuck again, and right now its back at the shop and they said it should be done by monday or tuesday. they might have to put another used transmission in, but either way it's free. should definitly be ready for my next trip...March 17 & 18

4x4Jeep 03-13-2012 01:17 PM

shop said they are waiting on a new (used) tranny....hopefully it's soon

peytonimor7 03-15-2012 11:43 AM

Lookin great so far! The lights and brushguard really made a difference with the front end. That's real cool that you incorporated shackles with your brush guard too. Sorry to hear about your tranny trouble, but atleast it's still under warranty.

I hope you can get it working again for your next wheeling trip the 17th! That's my birthday and I'll finally be 18 so I can go to Gulches here in SC. I love the look of a muddied up Laredo. A rear autolocker would really help with that mud, and it won't cost 1k like a set of mud tires would :D

4x4Jeep 03-15-2012 02:23 PM

thanks. i actually have a front bumper sitting in the garage...plan to cut it in half (seen a few wj's like that) that way it won't interfere with the brush guard mounting and it'll still cover up the upper part of the bumper.

they said the trans. will be done saturday morning, i'll be wheeling saturday afternoon into sunday.

never thought about a locker...don't know too much about them, but aren't they $500+ and tires should only be $800 for me but either way i can only dream:drool: about those, until i make more $$

4x4Jeep 03-22-2012 02:03 PM

problem after problem i finally picked up the jeep today. they ended up just rebuilding it for me, and i didn't have to pay a cent:D so brand new parts, makes no more noises and i'm happy. just in time for Jeep Jam too.

as soon as i got home i fabbed up a bumper i had sitting around, cut it in half cause the d-rings i have were in the way of the slotted stuff on the bumper. also fixed my horn...boy did i miss it

tomorrow i'll pick up some grade 8 bolts to mount the brush guard with. here's how it sits now:

in the future i'll prob paint the cladding and bumpers black

4x4Jeep 03-24-2012 11:38 PM

good day of wheelin' for me, not so much for the heep

on my way to jeep jam my newly rebuilt transmission started to overheat. i lost 4th gear, and i thought i was done for the day, but from reading the owners manual and talking with the mechanic i decided i could still attempt to drive to the event (since i preregistered)

my first jeep event i been to; was a good time...they had a stock, moderate and extreme course. ran the stock course 3x. then me and a buddy went to citrus wma for the first time and that turned out to be some awesome trails, for florida anyway. i did however blow my reverse...not sure how.

some pics and vids
blew a front left tire so the mud part was closed for a while :(

citrus wma

could be a snap ring issue in your trans that caused the reverse to go.
definitely liking the halved bumper!

Looks like you are having a lot of fun with the Jeep man! Sucks to hear that you are having some more problems with your transmission! Once I smelled a fluid after pulling hard through some mountains I realized that it was time for large auxiliary cooler was a must! Keep us posted man!

from what i read seems so.

thanks..i did a fast job on it too.

4x4Jeep 04-01-2012 01:17 PM

jeep is still being worked on, meanwhile i bought some used 4" rough country shocks for the wj, have a friend who is going to sell me some 3.5" springs, another buddy selling me the RC adjustable track bar and some front disco's. when i get some money saved up i'll be buying those. and also putting away some $$ for 31" treadwrights.

mrJ 04-01-2012 05:37 PM

There's 32's on CL right now. Brand new I think. And you don't need discos. I just took the front sway bar off

alwaysHI 04-01-2012 10:57 PM

hows it ride on the highway like that?

The time now is 05:37 AM.
