That is shady, the PO obviously knew there was a problem. Someone has had it apart and pulled out the missing teeth. If it wasn't the PO, the shop he took it to would be sure to mention something like "slightly large metal flakes" in the diff.
I've talked him lots because he wants to know how the jeep is doing. I can tell he was sad to let it go and misses it. Asks me how it wheels and stuff.. We texted regarly then when I said the locker is shot, I asked him where he got the lockrite and who put it in and he never has responded to me since. He has a vague build on RME and I seem to remember him saying his buddy put it in.
The jeep is in my parents garage but I'll try to get some pics when i can and post up
Sooo.. I had my dad go snap a few pics.. It's not as bad as I thOught. I must have exaggerated it in my mind do to being pissed lol
Also I told my dad to take a pic of those metal shards and he told me they were just pieces of the black sealant front the diff cover lol so NO metal was in my diff, yet I probably have 8-12 broken teeth.. Odd? I say yea..
Also this is what I did for the first week of having my jeep...
Friday Jan 28th
-Bought Jeep TJ Unlimited and went to Justins and Cleaned off overspray on hood ect.. Tried to straighten steering wheel (didn't quite do it enough..) Removed Burned up winch and winch plate...
Saturday Jan 29th
-Cleaned out all the crap the previous owner left in it...
Sunday Jan 30th
-I re-enstalled the charcoal canister and reset check engine light
Monday Jan 31st
-I did emissions and registered the jeep and also took care of the insurance
Tuesday Feb 1st
-I Installed my sway bar and Teraflex Quick Disco's (Thanks Braden )
Wednesday Feb 2nd
-I replaced my sway bar bolts and installed plastic cover over sway bar in front of grill (thanks Justin )
Thursday Feb 3rd
-I replaced the Bolts on the rear upper long arms (frame end) the previous owner had too small of bolts so there was play)
Friday Feb 4th
-I changed my oil, oil filter, Recharged my K&N/Mopar intake, touched up where hood was cut and put on a black trim piece.
Saturday Feb 5th
-Took The LJ wheeling for the first time! WOOT! also I re-uninstalled the charcoal canister (so i didn't destroy it wheeling
-Decided I should lift the LJ one more inch
After all that the jeep has been great until the lockrite started acting up. I thought it was normal sounding at first (sounded like an Aussie in a Dana 44a) but it only made the loud clang noise when under power turning left. I decided the locker was toast and ordered a Spartan to get me buy whil I decide what I'm Gunna do for axles soon (37's are a little big lol) I pulled off the diff and noticed the ring gear was shot!! And not a single piece of metal and clean oil. Leading me to believe the PO was hiding it and knew.. Prick..
Well the varilock differentials seem to engage with wheel speed and with the large tires sometimes it's hard to get them spinning enough. Then when they kick in it's to late. Ya I think 33's is pushing it for them. They do work and I know they helped me, but deffinalty less the when I had a 2" lift and stock tires.
Also if you are having trouble with them engaging in a tough spot. U can always pull ur parking brake a little and it will help the back lock up.
My vote with 33's would be get some light wheels and you won't notice a huge difference. Have heavy steel ones and u will.
I don't know about 311, I know he upgraded to the aussie rear. I like the varilocks, they haven't left me stranded yet. On the slickrock when I have had a tire lifted, I just applied a little brake to force power to the other side and make the lsd work. They have worked great for me with 35's, but they aren't lockers. For a dd, the lsd's rock!
