Which vehicle to modify???
To begin...Im not a pack rat, just cant stand to throw any Jeep vehicles away. I run them to around 200k, then park them as a backup vehicle...always planning to mod one of them into a weekend warrior...
My first ooption is a stock 1999 XJ Cherokee Classic...runs/looks good...but does have the death wobble from hell. AC broken
...costs too much to fix.
At 200K, I replaced it with a 2003 WJ Overland. Bone stock, everything works. At 200K, motor went...so, not being able to let her go...had Jasper engines put in new motor...and fixed heater, and drivers power window. Then had to take it back for new 02 sensor a few weeks later...and needed to put new brakes/rotors on. So other than bald tires needing replaced..it was again my dependable daily runner.
Three months go by...
This week came across a 2004 WJ Overland, bone stock with 55000 miles..couldnt pass it up. This is now going to be my daily driver (run around 3000 miles/month), so any mod done to it cannot result in poor road handling. I would post pics, but it currently is at the dealership having the (whine/grind/moan) diagnosed and repaired (thankgod for that 3month deaker warranty
. I searched all over the net for a low mileage WJ and had to buy this one based on carfax report and without personal inspection. To be honest, I almost lost hope
when I started hearing that (wtf?) noise on my turns and/or parking. I am not mr fixit and am very busy...so I had all but decided to sell all three Jeeps (including my Jeep hat, luggage, lunchbox, tshirt) and buy a 4Runner...However, I had a similar issue with the 03 WJ (above), correct fluid stopped the problem. SInce changing the fluid, the 03Wj never had an issue since...so hopefully the techs put the wrong fluid in the new WJ. Regardless, its cherry, and will be repaired soon.
SO...which vehicle to modify into a hunting/fishing/bugout/weekend warrior?
To be honest, I am not going to do the work myself. Some people have that mechanical gift...I dont. I work alot and almost no freetime...that results in cost being less of an issue for me. However, I am thrifty enough to try to utilize used afmkt parts when possible. Afterall, I would rather not put $3,500 in afmkt parts on a $2,500 vehicle. Nor would I likely take 2500 for said vehicle to be gone...I like having backup vehicles for parents/friends.
So, I could really use some (helpful) advice from some wheelers out there. Im leaning towards modding either the 03WJ or my new WJ. Thats largely because its so hard to buy a new vehicle and then start putting afmkt parts on an old vehicle...I think the XJ needs some attention the most, however its not as dependable as the other vehicles. And I do not have time to get stuck 1000 miles from nowhere because the (crank it twice to start
) fuel pump finally quit..and then I see a picture like...
and Im back where I started..
If anyone wants to trade a built warrior ready wrangler for the 03WJ and the 99XJ that would be ideal...However, if no members fit that bill currently, any helpful advice (such as easiest vehicle mod/availability of used parts/could lift stop xj death wobble, etc
) you can give would be much appreciated.
Will post pics as soon as I get the 04 WJ back...
