'03 Grand Cherokee Heater issue

Hi again, my '03 4L, 170k, G-C Laredo, has had this on-again, off-again heat issue. Starts up and temp gauge goes up normally. But sometimes no heat at all coming through vents... Especially after not being run for a few days. Then after driving and shut off for a 1/2 hour start back up and drive, heat comes back, but goes cold then warm again while driving, then cold.... in 12 degree weather, it's maddening... It seems to work much better if I drive it everyday, but let it sit for a couple days, and no heat... Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks...
I should add, that as far as I can tell, the radiator is always full...
