ZJ just turns off while driving?
i was driving my 1997 4.0L zj today and it was running funny but i didnt have any concern when it was running like that. all of the sudden it started to stutter while i was driving. after it stuttered for a second it just turned off and i didnt know what happened. i tried to start it again but i would just keep turning over, when it finally started to run again i tried to put it in reverse and i could back out of the parking spot i was in but right when i put it in drive the rpm went completely down to zero and it died and i have no clue what is the problem and what is making it turn off and run like that. if you know anything about that please reply and tell me what you know or if its happened to you! thank you so much

my 1996 ZJ has done that a few times. I replaced my idling sensor and it helped some my next replacement is a new fuel filter and maybe fuel pump and alternator. I dont know if any of that will help you or not thought.
You might have better luck posting this in the ZJ technical section

I had the same a few times. Plus, very close to max. rmp it looks like you cut of the fuel, situation is O.K. if you minimize rmp. Plus, it's a little lazy till 2500-3000 rmp. Any ideas?

My Jeep did the same thing it was the crankcase sensor. Engine wasn't sensing any crank and it just shut off.

Do you mean crankshaft sensor? Can I check it by disconneting when the engine is running?

crank position sensor failure is very very very common on the 4.0L. the sensor is screwed into the bellhousing and the wire runs in to a plug right behind the dizzy, if you trace down, you will find it, its not hard to replace.. good luck
