Wrangler will turn wont start?
I'm helping my daughter get her boyfriends 95 Wrangler, Rio Grande running as gift for the holidays.
Up till 2 month ago it ran. Now it will turn over AND run as long as I dribble gas into the throttle plate. When I stop dribbling gas it dies. I changed the fuelfilter but that did not help. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

Try banging on the gas tank to see if you can get the fuel pump to start up.

check for power at the pump and if you are getting power. then check for the right fuel pressure.

Gotta be the pump. Do what Cars76 said to do but with a rubber mallot. Crank the motor while somone bangs on the tank. If starts then bad pump.

Ill give it a shot
I got Friday off, so I'll go out and try beating on the gas tank and see if it works
Is there a way to see if I'm getting power to the gas tank without dropping the tank? Don't laugh I'm a newbee to Jeeps. |

yea hook a pressure tester up to the fuel rail and turn over ignition, if not try looking at the fuel rail their should be a small little valve that is on the fuel rail that looks like a valve take something pointy and push the needle in if any air comes out that means you have pressure. Also turn ignition but dont crank over, you should hear what sounds to be a spinning noise that will mostly be your fuel pump turning on, but 90% of the time it will turn on but not have pressure so check for fuel pressure and then if not their might be a stuck float or clogged line

Worked on it today
I had a bunch of stuff to tackle today so I save the fuel problem till last.
Forgot to bring a pressure gauge, but I beat on the tank and did some other checks but still it would not start. I had replaced the fuel filter, so I disconnected the fuel filter hose where it comes from the tank and goes into the filter. I cranked it and not a drop of fuel came out??? I know that it sat for a while so I'm thinking the fuel in the tank varnished up and screwed up the float and screen. Without doing a lot of testing first I'm thinking about dropping the tank and working on the pump and components. Does that sound right or am I getting ahead of myself. |

sounds like you have a problem with either the pump or the wiring to the pump.
I dont remember if the wranglers are like the XJs but if they are then theres no need to drop the tank to replace the pump, and you should be able to test for power without removing the tank. |

The thincker gauge orange wire, running in the loom in the tub on the drivers side is the power for the fuel pump. I belive its orange and black. Run 12v to that listen for the pump.
Oh, is there gas in the jeep? the gauges aren't that accurate. |

It'll be a few days till I drive over to where the Jeep is. I'm no expert on Jeeps but is there a fuel relay worth checking. I don't think the pump is working so it makes sense to see if its getting power at the pump. I'll try and follow the hot wire and see if there is a disconnect that I can break and check for power.

Finally dropped the tank
The weather on the east coast finally relented. I picked the jeep up and brought it to my place. After trying everything I could to make the fuel pump work , I dropped the gas tank . Of course with the learning curve it took 3 hours. I can probably do it in an hour now.
Any way i pulled the fuel pump assy out and took the pump off. I made some test leads and hooked it up to a power source, and you guessed it the pump was DOA. Their must have been some water in the tank as their was some corrosion on the assembly. Rather then take a chance I am replacing the whole assembly ($144.00 at Advance Auto). I think if it was my jeep I would site the gas tank and then cut a whole in the bed and then cover it with a hatch made from the bed of a junker 95 Jeep. Dropping that tank was a pain in the ***..... |
