WJ 4.7 V8 Lifter Issue Question

last week monday, wife was driving the WJ, and I was driving behind and next to her and asked her to push the jeep so that I could here what it sounded like, self have pushed it hard many times before

however this time the rocker arm on the 1st valve on the right hand side head, from inside the car jumped off

so pulled out the lifter, as the little cap that holds the lifter together had marks from having knocked by the rocker that had come off

as am very inquisitive and was going to order a new one, pulled the cap off and pulled the lifter appart
it was full of oil, and looked ok
ordered a new one and got it and fitted a new one
however, the new one if one pushed on the lifter it goes down and comes up again, the old one did not do that!!
there was no spring inside the old one, dont know if there is suppose to be a spring inside the lifter/lashpad adjuster
and not going to pull one of the new ones apart to see what is inside

so, what is inside the lifter that makes it return when squeezed by hand
if its oil, is it a spring, if its oil then what stops that oil from coming out
the old one, when I took it apart oil did come out, however it looked like engine oil

sure there will be someone here who can help satisfy my curiosity!!
