Why does gas in the tb Start my Engine?

I stalled today while I was out wheelin' and couldnt get it started. I noticed that my fuel gauge was all the way to the right on full, and I knew that I wasnt more than a half tank. Makes me think theres a short in the system. Anyway, I try to get it started over and over. This has happened before, just need to wait a while for the fuel gauge to go back to normal and the fuel pump to make that whirring noise. So, I wait and try, wait an try, still nothing happening. So I put some gas into the throttle body and it starts right up. Anybody know why this happens?
