Who has done a 4.3 Chevy swap?
Hello:
I will be doing a 4.3 swap into my CJ-7 once I put the body back on the frame. I have already measured for engine placement and tacked the mounts in. I bought a wrecked '92 S-10 with a TBI 4.3 and a 4L60E transmission. From this truck I took out the engine and transmission (it had a 231 but I'll be using my D300), along with the entire wiring harness. My questions are these: If you have done this swap, did you use the original harness or get an aftermarket one? I have sorted through mine until I think it is cleaned out to just the parts I need. What did you do about the torque converter lockup thing - the circuit that seems to be powered all the time except when the brakes are on? Did you run into any surprises? I know there always are, but I'm planning ahead. My current YJ has a 258, and I put a Howell kit on it (such a great improvement!) so on this CJ I figured I would use the whole engine. I would like to think that it will be lighter, more powerful, and more economical than the 304 that it's replacing. Dan.

i run a 4.3/700r4 in the yj.
i started with a 91 s10 and went from there. i used a painless performance harness so i didnt have any bad connections etc to hunt down. a motor swap is complicated enough.... ![]() i used the tbi 4.3 fuel pump from a s10 aswell. fitted into the yj tank with a little persuading. never caused a problem. i have the t/c lockup wired in, using the painless harness. i had to wire my brake switch differently using a relay for the chevy ecm, then the normal wiring for the lights. took about 10 minutes. you can find directions at painless performances website. part number for the kit will be 60101 IIRC. click on the part number and download the instructions. i rebuilt my motor, and had the tranny rebuilt before the install. i went .040 over and put a mild cam in the motor. all valves were reground and cleaned. i ported the heads etc etc. i scored a deal from www.s10forum.com ( a good resource) on an edelbrock performer intake and chip for the ecm. i get @17mpg, with 37x14.50's, 4.88 gears and soa. power wise, i find it the ideal balance between weight and power. very under rated motor IMO. if you need any other info, either read through my build thread in my sig, or shoot me a pm. martin
