ax5 is connected to 2.5
the ax15 is connected to the 4.0

I may be wrong but I do believe that the transfer cases are as follows as well

ax5 connects to the NP207
ax15 connects to the np231

(Not taking into account all the new stuff )

In general I would say the AX5. I have and AX5 in my 1984 and have bolted up a V6 block to it. The Fourylinder and the V6 do have the same bolt pattern. I wish I had more info on the automatics but my experience has been limited to the Manuals since that is what my project has revolved around.
