what engines will for a jeep transmission?

I have a 76 cj7 with the 304 I'm looking to do an engine swap of some sort it has the Borg warner 4 speed out of an 84 cj7 with the bigger splines was wondering what motor would fit the tranny with just changing the bellhousing I know the motor mounts and such may need a little fab work too just wanting to know what will work with the transmission any info would be greatly appreciated o and looking to go with a ford or Chevy engine

You might as well look for another transmission. That T4 is a light duty unit that has trouble lasting behind 258s, much less a V8. In fact, Novak won't make any adapters for that transmission for that reason

If it's a T18, then it didn't come from an 84, but would have been an option in 76. You'll need to figure out what it came from.

Do you still have the Dana 20 transfer case or a D300? If you have a D300, its most likely a Ford transmission and a Ford bellhousing will bolt to it.

If there is an adapter between the transmission it's probably from a 72-75 CJ. Reverse right and up beside 3rd and 4:1 1st gear.

No bell adapter and a D20 could be a 76-79 CJ or a Ford. If its a 4:1 1st gear its from a 76-77 CJ. A 6.32 1st gear could be 77-79 CJ or Ford. Any 77 and older T18 will have reverse right and up by 3rd gear. Any 79 and newer will be right and down by 4th gear. 78 seems to have been a crossover year.

Once you figure out exactly what you have, you'll be able to figure out what it will take to adapt to a different engine. You could swap in an AMC 360 without changing anything, no matter which version you have.

Well I have to buy a clutch for an 84 for it because of the splines were bigger and the front shaft was bigger and yes it has an adapter bt the tranny and the d300 and reverse is right and down

Was figuring on a 351 Windsor or a 289/302 as I already have both and haven't had much luck finding a 360 for less than 1000

I know the Ford T18 and Jeep T18 both have a 1-1/16" input shaft. The T176, T4, & SR4 found in 80s jeeps have 1-1/8" input shafts. Not sure about the T19, but my guess would be its the same as a T18. Ford T18/T19 have a PTO port on the passenger side. Jeep T18 has PTO port on Drivers side. The other 3 have no PTO port.

Is 1st gear synchronized? T18 isn't, but the rest are.
What numbers are you running that come up as a T18?
Is the shifter stick curved or straight?

And if you can post a picture of the transmission that would help tremendously.

Don't have a pic on me but the shifter is curved and first gear is hard to get into but that's all I know on that but seeing that it has 11/8" shaft it may not be a t18 I'm running the numbers on the tower as that's all I have found but the tower is abnormal too it has a small tower that mounts to the tower plate instead of it being one big piece such as the others

What are the actual numbers? I don't believe it is. Sounds like either a T4 or SR4.

First, post a picture of the transmission. This should help identify it. also, such info as iron or aluminum casing, syncro'd first gear, or round versus "Texas" t case mount would help narrow down things a bit.
Barring the question of why a swap, your easiest bet is a 360 out of a Waggy or j truck. Bolts right in there with no mods and is a good jump in power.
