My buddy Tom told me about this swap a few weeks ago. After hours of research we didnt come up with anything definitive so we just went out to the u-pull-it and tried it. We found out it seems to be the turbo models that have it. We pulled 2 lockers (limited slip, whatever you wanna call it), and a high pinion dana 30 with 4.10s from a 2.8 Cherokee. The vovlo came with 3.73 gears so we knew it should accept the lower gears. The Jeep 4.10 ring went right on and bolted up. Looking good! Then we tried putting it in the rear..too wide, barely. So after a few hours of grinding diwn the races she's in!! Still gotta test it but it looks promising!
I'll post a picture soon.
Thanks for the link, that one didnt come up in my searches. Were going to be putting it in my buddys yj with 35" boggers within the next few days..I'll let you know how well it holds up lol. If it survives the trail there's a mudbog in 3 weeks that will be the true test.
Good luck. I'd be skeptical of the D30's with 35's but run whatever you like.
This is part of the beauty of building it yourself and using readily available stock stuff. It doesn't cost a fortune, and you enjoy the work. If you blow it up, well, you tried. You'll build it better and stronger the next time.
I've got the stock chevy G80 in my rear 14 bolt, and I'm going to run it despite the naysayers here. If it blows up, well the axle was free with the truck the rest of my parts came from, and I've got very little $$$ into it. I'll just find a 14B FF and slap it in later and it won't cost any more than if I had done that to start with.
I wonder how that would hold up to a ZJ w/ 31's......

We just put another one in my buddys 8" long armed xj with 35s. It didn't blow up or lock on the road, but I guess another problem is that these posi's are from '91...they might be worn out already. It wasn't locking every time. When it locked it was nice and smooth so there is still hope lol.
We had 3 Volvo lsd's at the last mudbog. 2 survived and 1 didn't but I'm 95% sure his pinion bearing blew, and he five-finger-discounted it, so that's karma lol. Our group is now running 4 Volvo's with more to go in. 3 are on 35s and 1's 33's but he drives it hard, no issues yet! The carrier slides right into newer rears, about 97 and up, older ones need the races ground down. They all need about 4 millimeters (up to the chamfer where the splines start) cut off of the driver side shaft with a cutt-off wheel.
The single problem I see isn't the lsd at all, but the fact that its a used item from 90's cars. Some are more wore out then others. 2 work pretty good, 1 works ok, and actually locks too much.. If we could get rebuild kits it would be amazing, but either way I like a $45 gamble!
I just picked one of these up today and am going to do an install with lots of pics and a review on how well it works, i think for the money it will be a heck of an upgrade, they look like a really quality piece strength wise
