valve tap?

I only have about 62,000 on my Jeep and I might have a valve tap. There's a clicking sound when its idle and when I accelerate the clicking goes faster too. I took it to my cousin whos a part time mechanic and he looked at it for a little and said the noise is coming from inside near the top of the engine. He said he wants to look at the valves and everything but the next day he's free is next wednesday. Why am i having engine problems with such low mileage? I do a but of light off-roading and it's a 4 banger so its not like im a speed demon or anything. He's already looking around for rebuild engines and everything. Im going to get a second opinion but whatever it is it doesnt look good
