I ask this because something is still engaging the front axle. I need to replace the two front U-Joints because they are clanking when I drive. My 4 wheel drive is not engaged so I assume the hubs should not be turning but they are. And this knob seems to have something to do with that. When I turn it all the way counter- clockwise the u-joint clanking seems to stop. But then I have some other awful noise when I turn the steering sharp right.
That *looks* like a posi-lok for your front axle. It replaces the vacuum actuated central axle disconnect. When you shift into 4wd you would need to pull out on that to lock the two piece passenger side front axle together. It does not function as a locker.
