My U-joint has been clicking and I want to replace it. i was wondering if anyone knows where i can find a write-up on replacing one. also, where's a good place to buy one. it doesn't need to be a great one, as my offroading is limited to weekends and nothing too serious. thanks for any help.
It's pretty easy to change, just unbolt the straps on the pinion and driveshaft. Give it a light tap with a rubber hammer (if it doesn't come loose easily). Then put your new U-joint together, be sure to grease it, and out it back together. You'll need a pair of snap ring, or needle nose pliers. And I think the bolts on the straps are 5/16.
If you don't do much heavy wheeling, you could just go for a U-joint from Auto Zone, Advance, Pepboys, etc. I'd just get their highest quality one they have.

I have a similar question. I'm looking for a step-by-step on how to replace the U Joints that connect the front wheels to the front axle on a TJ. It doesn't look terribly complicated, but it'd be nice to see how someone else has done it. I've found ones that connect the drive shaft to the front differential, but none that talk about the two wheel u joints (one on each side).
Bringing this one back to life. Anyway just a quick question for UTmike. I think my u joint on the rear drive shaft is going as well but im not sure, to be honest I just started doing burn outs with it and now I get a clicking noise in 1st and 2nd gear. It only happens if I let the rpms drop down or if I really get on her. Does this sound anything like yours? Any help would be appreciated

Ok, my 02 TJ is making the clunking sound and is now vibrating pretty badly around 55mph when i hit a bump. I am no expert but everyone i talk to that has a jeep or once had one has told me that they had the same problem and it was the U-Joint. so i am going to check it, but i need to know some obvious signs that it is bad. can anyone help me with that.
also i am not a mechanic but i am pretty handy with things is this something that i can do on my own. i would like to do it, but i need to know the risks of doing it myself and potentially killing something.
Put the jeep in nuetral and chock the wheels.Please chock the wheels.Don't run yourself over.Climb underneath.Grab pinion yoke in one(rear u joint) hand and driveshaft in the other hand(you want the u-joint in between your two hands) and give it a twist(opposite ways).Basically your trying to be superman and wring the u-joint in half with your bare hands.If your getting vibration in you driveline chances are it's bad enough to notice right away.Look for rust by your u-joint cap.A sure indicator that it's trash and all the needle bearings are ground up and falling out.Do the same for all u-joints.Oh ,and the clunking sound is the u-joint moving inside the cap.Trust me you will find it immeadiately.Get it fixed or your gonna spit the driveshaft out soon.

I don't really want to Hijack the OP's question, but I would rather do that than to get blasted for not using the search!
I used Alldatadiy.com and they list 3 different part numbers to replace 5 different U-joints.
What I am confused about is the proper size. What is the correct size or does it matter. 3 5/8" or 3 7/32". My concern is that numerous part sites list the same part will work in all of the locations.
Could someone please clear the mud on this? I need to silence the sparrows.
For driveshafts in non-Rubi TJ's you need Spicer 153-X u-joints [ 1310 ]
For the front axles you need 760-X - this is the aftermarket Spicer that replaces and is a bit stronger than the 297-X that came stock. Either will work.
So, I have a bad U joint on my rear drive shaft. Took the shaft out, pulled the snap rings off and can not press the joint out. I tried with a hammer first and then rented a ball joint press and have it cranked as tight as I can and still nothing. I tried tapping it while under pressure. Haven't tried heat yet because I can't even get to my shed for the torch(too much snow).

I had the same trouble with my axle u joints. I was told to hold the joint in a vise and hit the ears of the shaft, not the caps. When one cap starts to pop thru, grab the vise grips and twist the cap off. Rotate it and do it again. It worked. I couldn't believe how easy it was with that trick. and I spent almost three hours trying to do it with a press. go figure
Take the snap ring out. Grab a 3/4" socket put it on the cap and hit it with a hammer until the cap slides out. Then pull the u-joint out and then tap the other cap thru. Do the same to install it. You don't need any special tools. You don't even need a vise. BTW learn to do it this way because if you break on a trail this is most likely the way your changing it.
