Typical 4.0L Engine life?
The jeep bug has bitten me bad. I've recently came across a 99 wrangler with the 4.0 in it with a 5spd man. My only concerns are is it has 122K miles on it and he said it had a lifter noise in it. This will not be a daily driver but I'm a little curious on the typical mileage life of the 4.0. Thanks for any info available!

122k is nothing for a 4.0 My ZJ is about to turn 202k and still runs strong and doesn't use any oil. From what I've read lifter ticks are pretty normal for these engines, both of mine do it a little bit sometimes and the YJ only has 30k on it. There are guys here with 4.0s that have 300k+ on them.

122k is just getting broken in. i've seen a 4.0L with 380k on it, never opened, just regular maintenance. as long as the 4.0L has had and will continue to have regular maintenance performed it will last well into 200k.

My '93 Grand has 218K on the clock....just replaced the water pump..
Little bit of piston slap when very cold out, little bit of lifter noise right after start up. Other than that, been a dead nuts reliable engine.

I had an 89XJ with 200K on the clock before i sold it. I never had any major problems just a leaky rear main seal, but thats the norm for 4.0's. I still see it around town.

mine is 1992 cherokee now with just under 235,000, put about 10,000 on it since buying it a few years ago. engine is fine, leaks a very little bit, tho clutch is giving me some trouble now.
on the noise, i don't know what bad lifters would sound like, but that also could just be someone's guess, maybe its something else. a 1999 with that low mileage and 5 speed is pretty attractive if its in any kind of decent condition, IMO
