transmission issue

Hi guys im new to the forum and new to jeeps. I usually am a tuner guys have always wanted a jeep. I have a 94 grand cherokee Laredo with the 4.0L I-6 with an auto transmission. My problem is when its cold and I put it in drive or reverse it might move but once it gets worm only reverse works sometimes. It doesnt seem to have much power when it does move. To me it seems like the clutch is slipping. What should I check first. I have already checked the fluid and the level is good but it is a bit off colored and has a bit of a smell. Any help would be great.

P.s I dont know anything else about the jeep. Sorry.

Its not looking good for your trans. To lose all fwd gears means you have lost hydraulic pressure or broke something internal, since it seems ok when cold then my guess is a hydraulic problem. Seals swell when they get warm which can cause leakage, also fluid gets thinner when it gets hot which can exaggerate the leakage problem. My guess is a problem in the fwd clutch drum seals, piston and clutches. The discolored and smelly fluid is probably because its burned.

Ok thx. I did drop the trans pan last night and the fluid was a bit discolored but the smell wasnt to bad. I took the filter off and it was filthy. The previous owner said they did a fliud flush but I dont think they did. Is there a chance that a clogged filter and dirty fluid could cause the problems. For examplr not let enough fluid thru.

There is a slight chance that the filter is clogging but I would assume not at this point. A filter and a few quarts of fluid would be a cheap guess though, good luck.

I always bought local, maybe a trans shop in your area can help, or an auto parts store. You probably want to look for a "kit" as in a complete kit, clutches, steels, and seals. Then you need to consider a torque converter, this is where you might want to ask a local trans shop on options. Seeing where you are located you might try some online stores or even ebay but check prices and verify shipping etc.
