Transmission Identification?

hey everyone...new guy here with my first of probably many questions. I just swapped a guy my 4 wheeler for an 85 cj7. It has the 258 in it that will barely run as well as the rear main seal is shot. I am looking at doing a v8 swap to bypass both problems. I crawled under it and got the trans tag plate info, but I am not having much luck identifying it. I know it is a 4 speed and the tag reads as follows:

RGGE24 53595389 0667

If anyone can help me out it would be much appreciated!

If its stock/oem it could either be a T176 or T4. Both are fairly light duty with the T176 considered slightly stronger. IMO I would not consider either of these strong enough for a V8 and marginal for light duty wheeling with a 258. There should be numbers casted into the case of the trans (casting #) which usually helps with identity.

Here is a link with pics and info on all Jeep transmissions, The link should pull up infor on the T4 but the T176 and other transmissions are linked in a column to the left.

Thanks for the link and info! I will be getting out there scrubbing the undercarriage tomorrow to see if I can find the castings on the case!

You dont necessarily need the casting numbers, the two 4spds are not real similar in appearance just compare the pics. Look at the T4 and see how the shifter goes into the back housing behind the gearbox, and the T176 is right in the middle of the gear box. Also another quick glance is the T4 has a lot of ribbing casted into the gearbox, the T176 gearbox is relatively smooth. The T4 has a rib right down the center of the bottom of the trans with the drain plug on the side, the T176 is smooth but the drain plug is right on the bottom.

The 53595389 tells me it is a T177 and is 81 only, so someone has changed it in the past.

Thanks Mmerlinn! Now I am curious as to if it came from a full size jeep or a CJ...trying to make sure i get the correct engine with the correct adapter plates if needed.

Should not matter since all T177s are exactly the same. However, in 1981, it could have come in the CJ7, Cherokee, J10/20, or Wagoneer.
