It has a steep OD, unusual shift points and a history of not lasting in higher stress onroad usage. Offroad it is perfectly fine.

While nothing is impossible, swapping is difficult. There are people here who would not wish the 42RLE on their worst enemy but who replaced a failed one with a new one given the difficultly of doing otherwise.

Most make do. A supplemental cooler and potentially supplemental filter are good ideas to minimize problems.

That really sucks! I have a 2008 WK, 1994 XJ (rebuild project) and i was looking at this TJ unlimited fully loaded with 32's as a weekend driver and off road for when i go to my camping trips but i don't like messing with problematic tranny's. How hard is it to swap to a manual tranny?

Any type of transmission change on a TJ that left the factory with a 42RLE will be a challenge (absent perhaps bug picture wholesale drivetrain and computer changes).
