tranny for 318

I just bought a 86 cj7 has a 318 in it with t5 transmission. I am wanting to replace the t5 leaning toward an automatic. any suggestion for a fellow on a budget.

Sell me your transmission and bellhousing ;-) That will give you a few extra dollars for your swap. You can find a variety of different transmissions available to you to fit the 318. In the automatics you have the 904 and the 727 which are both 3 speed automatics with non-lockup torque convertors (meaning you do not have a 'direct' gear like newer transmissions do). These can be had in 2 and 4wd versions, and converting one to the other is pretty easy. The downside to them is you will get horrible fuel mileage if you drive over about 40 MPH. In newer automatics you have the choice between several that are all based on the same case/design. The 42RH/E, 44RH/E, 45RH/E, and the 46RH/E are all 4 speed automatics with lockup torque convertors. They can be found in Dodge Rams and Dakotas, as well as in Jeep Grand Cherokees with a V-8. These are a bit more expensive to purchase and also require additional wiring requirments for your rig. If you must have an auto I would steer you towards the 727. Its a simple install process without much by way of extras to the swap.
