I live in B.C Canada and we have lots of hills....I'm planning to regear , but for the last year I have been rolling on 35s and 3.07 gears.. inline 6 and a 5 sp manual....never seen 5th gear,, for the bush 4hi is useless,,, but for a dd the gearing is liveable....I plan on going to 4.88s in a 8.8 that I'm working on.......,good luck

I was actually just in Cincinnati this past week, well Newport area actually but i drove the area i have 33's with 3.07s AT and I6. I can say that the hills are a pain but it is definitely tolerable, but again that is purely highway driving.

How about some 32 X 10.5 R15 or 32.5 X 9.5 R15? Those are a lot lighter and less rolling resistance than a 33 X 12.5 R15.

Also, those two I mentioned are slightly shorter, but still way better than a 31. Most 31 are only 30.5 and are still decent offroad.

Another boon of the two sizes I mentioned is they work great with stock rims.

They are way to narrow i dont like the look of a tall narrow tire. I am set on the 33x 12.5s the gearing is just what worries me.

OK. Suite yourself, but whenever you're on packed snow or ice, please remember this thread. Narrower is better, wider is way slicker.

I had 9.5, then 11.5, and now 10.5. You put some 33 X 12.5 on and drive on packed snow or ice and then tell me what you think looks/is better when you're stuck or slid off road, and soccer moms with 30 X 9.5 are easily driving past you and they're not even slipping or spinning (and they haven't even aired down). This type thing is a yearly occurance in my area each winter.

Also guys with the tall narrow and tall medium width mud tires are the ones that win the mud bogging competitions here too.

You might think that 12.5 wide look cooler now, but after you see what actually works best, it had an effect on what I think looks cool. The tall narrow tires work better for most things, and therefore look cooler to me. The only exception is harcore rockcrawling, where tall and wide is best.

Since you live in Ohio, I assume you get some winter snow and ice? Also some mud? You'll see.
The only 12.5 wide that I think are good on winter roads are Duratrac, MTR-K, and Trxus, but guess what? All 3 of those run narrower than their stated size. They're called 33 X 12.5 wide, but the Duratrac and MTR-K run at least 1/2" narrower than a true 12.5 wide. The Trxus run a full inch narrower than a true 12.5.
MudB8 and myself compared side-by-side a Trxus 34 X 12.5 to a Cooper STT 35 X 12.5. The Trxus was 1" taller and 1" narrower. The Trxus 34 X 12.5 is really a 35 X 11.5. The Trxus 33 X 12.5 is really a 34 X 11.5. I think that running narrow is one reason Trxus do good on winter road conditions and excellent in mud, as well as because of the hybrid tread.
The Trxus is actually great for winter roads, mud, and everything; but then it's really not a 33 X 12.5 despite being called such. The Trxus 33 is actually a 34 X 11.5. At 11.5 wide they're narrow enough to please me, and ought to be wide enough to please you. Normally 10.5 wide is my favorite width, but with the Trxus, 11.5 wide is great.

I run with 33x12.5 TrXus MTs and will never buy another tire again.. By far the best tires on the market in my opinion.

Just did some winter snow / ice wheeling at the cliffs terrain park and was able to climb steap icy trails better then anyone else. Other people that I was wheeling with ran duratacs, BF ATs, and BF MTs. My buddy drew's duratacs were 2nd best and the rest of the group just flat out struggled on any of the slick steap stuff.

I run 33's on my 6spd 4.0 with 3.07 gearing and have no problems. Heck I still use 6th gear most of the time unless heading into alot of wind or up a big hill. I am getting about 17 MPG's but of course I live in Oklahoma. There isn't alot of hilly areas around here.

I had 3.07s in a wrangler and it was pathetic off road with 31s (6 cyl). If you are going to go with 33s then re-gear the axles or accept loosing any mileage that you have and any pretense at performance, both on and off road.
If you off road in malls you might get away with it.

Enjoy!

Most off roading I do is just trail riding. This is my daily driver so i want it to look the way i like. Its a 2003 and in good shape im not going to beat the hell out of it. If i want to do that i will buy a old CJ or YJ but for now looks are more important since i baby it.

I offroad my daily driver once if not twice a month... and pretty hard at times. My 3.07s and 33s do absolutely fine offroad. When you start to bog down in 4HI, then engage the 4LO. I have never had a problem ripping up steap trails or crawling over anything.

Yea B2CARPEN thats what i figured. I took my basically stock TJ out last weekend (it has 30x9.5 AT) and the trails were terribly muddy and it did fine. I usually don't go out in that kind of stuff because i had mud everywhere and it was a pain to clean. so typically the easy dry trails are no issue for it and the 33s will give me plenty of clearence. I think that is what i will do is a 4 inch suspension lift (Most likely Rough Country 4 inch short arm with 2.2 shock upgrade.) and 33x12.5s i think it will look good and do good for the off-roadin i do

I dont want it to rev way out on the highway is the thing and im affraid 4.10s will do that. and being that most the highway driving i do is in indiana where speed limit is 70 i usually go about 75-80 i dont want it to be runnin 3 grand for 200 miles.
I hated having 3.73 and 33's. I have a 4.0 with a 5sp. I can't imagine 33 with 3.07s.

I will eventually re-gear it to a 4.11 but not right away since i don't have the cash to do so. and i would really like to put a locker in but i would have to wait a really long time for that.

You should think about 4.56s. I will assume you have a d35 if you have 3.07s. That rear end isn't really the best choice for tires much larger than stock. If money is an issue you need to becareful. If you plan on off-roading the jeep I would think about getting a stronger rear axle before I got larger tires.
