TJ going to put 33's on but it has 3.07 gears....
Hi,
I am going to be lifting my jeep here soon and i just realized that i have 3.07 gears. which I know is high for 33's but i was wondering if you guys think it would be much of a problem to run it with that set up for awhile. I'm a college kid who does alot of highway driving and this is my only vehicle. So i wanted to keep it highwayable. but the 3.07s just seems a little too low. I thought about a 3.55 or 4.10s but according to a couple sites if i change to the 4.10s i have to change out the differential case. let me know what you guys think. Thanks

Depends on what part of Cincinnati you live in. If you live more towards down town or more than 20miles outside, you could get away with 3.73's if you have a 4.0L... if you live in the 10-20mi outside, the hills will kill you and you will likely want 4.10-4.56 gears. Especially on 275... some of those long uphill sections will give you problems going north on the east side.
I'm from Cincinnati so I have a pretty good idea of its terrain. |

I have the 3.73's with my 32's and an auto and it drives great. Do you have an auto or manual trans? the 3.07's is definitely gonna be rough on the highway with 33's but I know people who have done it and it's do-able. If you want to piece it together and can't afford the gears yet then yes you can do it, but will it be good on the highway...absolutely not.
I'm from VT and I don't have any problems with the hills here which I would imagine are bigger and steeper than in Cinci...but don't know first hand.

Yea I have a 5-spd with the 4.0. and i cant quite afford the gears yet thats why i was asking. I think i'll stick with the 3.07 until i can afford new ones then get either 4.10s or 3.73s. I dont want it to rev way out on the highway is the thing and im affraid 4.10s will do that. and being that most the highway driving i do is in indiana where speed limit is 70 i usually go about 75-80 i dont want it to be runnin 3 grand for 200 miles.

I have 3.07s with 33s and I have been running this set up since 2005. Its ok, not great. But I hardly notice the power decrease anymore. I use 3rd and 4th gear mostly. Gas mileage is ok, im sure it could be better.
On the highway its mostly 4th gear, and my RPMs are around 2,200 for 60mph I have been saving for a re-gear, but usually the money goes to other parts.

You'll never get out of 4th gear with 3.07's I can tell you that now. 5th gear in my CJ was worthless with 33's and 3.31 gears. Since you have an OD tranny, when you re-gear go to at least 4.10's.

I don't know what Im getting for gas mielage, but I fill up once a week and I do alot of driving.
As far as using 5th gear, I can use it, but I get more power in 4th. I also have a manual tranny.

Alright, thanks. My only reservation with the 4.10s is the what the rpms will be when im on the highway at 75....that truely is what worries me.

Put the 33s on and see how it feels. Save up then re-gear. For 33s I would say 3.73 would be the best for highway driving.
Here is the gear ratio chart Jeep Parts, Jeep Accessories & Jeep Soft Tops From The Jeep Parts Experts - Quadratec

thanks that chart is pretty helpful. seems like the 4.11s aren't that high up from what i thought. and the 3.73 would be ideal for highway. Thanks. Now all i got to do is save up the money for all the new stuff
What about te differential case though. quadratec says i will have to get new ones since im makin the step what you guys know about that? and what you guy recommend? |

It will be fine... I've been running 33s w/ 3.07 ratio for a while now and it's tolerable. You will pretty much only use 5th gear for coasting and will lose some acceleration power but it's not as bad as everyone says it is. I'm planning on upgrading to 4.56 gears when the funds are available.
Do it and see for yourself... then start planning ahead for new gears ![]()

I am currently running 3.07 with 33's and the 4.0 w/ 5spd. 5th gear is almost never used, I am re gearing to 4.56 in a couple of months. From what I am told hereon this site form the experts, 4.56 is ideal for 33's and if your going to 35's at all, go with 4.88's, Best thing you can do is do a search for anyone in your area with 33's and 4.56 and go for a ride. i wish I could do that but I am going to take everyones advise and jump into 4.56.
Good Luck.

The stock Rubicons run the 4.10 gears w/ 31" tires so that should tell you something. The mistake a lot of people make is upgrade to a less desired ratio due to fear and not be satisified with the results a couple months down the road.
