Tera 4 to 1 low range kit good for offroading in Europe

Hello,

I have a question about the tera 4 to 1 low range kit. Is the tera 4 to 1 low range kit only recommended for rock crawling or can it also be used for trails , mud and other offroading?

I ask this question because we dont have many rocks too climb here in the Netherlands. We drive true the forrest and in sand. I know that you can also buy the atlas or klune low range kit but the problem are the prices here in Europe. We pay almost 2000 dollars for the tera low range kit and the Klune or Atlas cost here around 4000 dollars or more. So you see it saves us a lot off money too buy a tera low range kit instead off the other 2.

So can i use my tera for sand , forrests , mud and trail or must i forget it and just drive on with my normal gears.

I have the 4.88 gear ratio in my Cherokee XJ

Greetings Michel

Do you have a need to go slower? That is the only thing a 4:1 is going to do for you.

If you want to see how different it is go to http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html and you can compare the 4:1 vs a standard NP231

Thanx for your answer. The problem is that we have a veru different area too drive. One moment you are in a mudpit off 25 inches and 5 minutes later you have a big hill too climb. So the area has everthing in it. But the hills are mostly mud or sand. So do i need or can i use a tera low range kit?

Greetings Michel

Hi Michel-
Any 4 to 1 solution (Atlas, Tera, others) is designed for low-speed rock crawling, where you need slow speeds and precise control. For mudding and sand, that type of gearing is not needed or even desired. You need wheel speed in those situations, not low gearing. Tera even specifies that RPMs over 3000 or so is not recommended for the TeraLow unit.
If the majority of your wheeling is mud or sand, I'd stay away from the 4 to 1 in the t-case. I do mostly rocks and slow-speed trails, so the Atlas comes in very handy for me.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for your help! You really helped me. I will leave the tera out.

Sounds like the right choice.
The tera low is mostly for rocks and slowing you down for them and saving the clutch.
I have one and love it.
I find the 4 to 1 in the way when not on rocks. When I need or want to go faster than crawl, I need to turn off 4lo.
Also don't forget..it increases wheel torque by 50%. If you have a stock or near stock drivetrain, you WILL break things.

I got dana 30 front axle 4.88 r&p with stronger axle shaft etc
Rear dana 44 33 spline axle shaft with locker and 4.88 r&p

So it is a bit stronger than normal. But i see the point. It is great for crawling but the rest is not the area for the tera low range kit i see.

Greetings
