Takes a second or sometimes 2 to get the auto trans engaged.

Hi ! I have a Jeep Cherokee sport yr 2000 with auto transmission that is having problems with having a 1 to 2 seconds gap before the
Transmission engages. This happens most of the time when I do a full stop and then the gap happens when I step on the gas.
Do I need a new transmission or any thing I need to check? Oil trans is good.
