Synthetic Oil

I recently bought a 2006 Wrangler 4.0L (3500 mi) and am thinking of switching to synthectic oil.
Does this make a significant difference in engine life? How often do you change this oil? Best type to get? This would be the first time using this type of oil so please respond with any tips.

Thanks

You will get a million different answers to your question. I can offer the following facts that are hard to argue with: AMSOIL, Redline, and Royal Purple are very high quality synthetic lubricants made from PAO base stocks. Mobil1 is now formulated using Group III base stocks. Mobil1 is known to produce high iron wear in the Jeep 4.0L motor. The only way to determine proper drain intervals using a high quality oil is to perform regular used oil analysis.

Check out http://theoildrop.server101.com and start to make some of your own decisions. My personal decision has been to run AMSOIL 0w-30 in my 2004 2.4L TJ since new and AMSOIL 10w-30 in my V-8 CJ. I am currently working on a 10,000+ mile oil change interval based off of Used Oil Analysis from Blackstone Labs.

Definatley put some more miles on it first to break in the motor properly. Ive heard this from others on this forum. Id say swap at 15K.

I switched at ~6mo/5k miles. I've been using Amsoil XL7500 5W-30 in the winter, and 10W30 in the summer changed every 6mo/5k miles. I haven't done any testing, I just change it every 6 months.

No need. 3,000 miles is no problem to switch it over. Take a look at high-end euro cars. They factory fill with synthetic. When I am done rebuilding the extra 304 V-8 that I have it will be taking synthetic for it's first fill.

You can put Syn oil in a brand new engine with no problem. Many cars come from the factory with syn oil. Amsoil is a really good oil. But. It is not readily available. I wish they sold in in stores. I use the Mobil 1 products as you can buy them virtually anywhere.

Syn oil will run your lube functions better. In many cases the engine will run slightly cooler. But then again the dino oils they have today are really good products. The big advantage of syn oil is an extended service life as it does not break down as quick. I run mine as long as 7-8 miles in my car and pickup. On the Jeep it'll depend on my dust conditions. If you run in extreme dirt oil changes need to be more often. If you plan on running syn oil and changing oil every 3000 miles the usefulness of syn is wasted IMHO. Just go dino oil in that case.

I ran dino Chevron 10w30 for the break-in on my 4.6L stroker, now I'm running Amsoil 10w30, from what I can tell it's a high quality group IV synthetic. Not the XL version, the high performance rated one, yellow/orange label, now looks like it's re-done to a white/bluish label. I'm running Amsoil for all lubricants, in all my vehicles. It's also readily available in my small town, so it's cheaper for me than Mobil, Castrol, or any other synthetics.

Always had great luck with Amsoil, no need to change. By the spring I'm installing my Amsoil Bypass filter system, should have a 10-11 quart crankcase capacity then, good for 20-25,000 miles.

I'm switching to Royal Purple at about 5200 miles. I got a 4.7 so probably not to much of a difference, except in extreem coold weather, but it sure won't hurt it.

Amsoil is great. I just switched about 6k ago. I got 88k on my 98 tj. Barely burned any oil. Check out their oil filters too and in JP magazine this month they feature Amsoil with new products.
