strange problem now wont start.

98 TJ. It gets to around 2,000rpm then sputters, misses, backfires, idle drops down to almost nothing. But if I can time it just right and break it past the 2,000-2,500rpm range it will be like some one let go of a rope and it will run fine. I have no cat. p.o. took it off so it just has a muffler. Today I let it idle for about 1/2hr to see if it would clear but it didn't and the check engine light was flashing. I turned it off and now it wont start again. I did play with the timing a little before letting it idle but it was idling normal.

Replaced the distributor cap, rotor, and camshaft sensor (my jeep is a 98 but the one autozone had for a 98 did not match, the one for 99 did). Still didn't start. Retarded the timing a little and it tried to start. Turned it back a little more and started right up. No more hessitation missing or anything. Not sure what the actual problem was but it runs better now than it did before. Still think there is an engine swap in my near future tho. :-)

Well......... It's intial journey was fine. We went a good 10 miles with a stop in the middle. No problems. Left this evening, started fine mand ran fine..... For about 1/2 mile. Stopped at stop light, turns green, hit the gas and right back to the same issue. Got to just about 2k and sputter, backfire. Turn in the 1st drive running rough, get turned around and back on the road downshift and it clears out. Rest of the journey had no issues. Park it for about 5hrs. Head back home. Starts kind of hard, runs fine for about a mile with 3 stop signs and a red light. Head down a hill just before highway on ramp get on the gas to pass the guy next to me and it starts sputtering again. Abort the highway idea takes a while to clear out this time but eventually makes a little pop and back to running fine. Hopefully I can limp it thru another day. Have to work 2 jobs tomorrow but should have some time sat afternoon to do something..... Not sure what tho. ANY advice would be great!!! I might start with crank sensor.

Ok. So, I have replaced the camshaft position sensor and crankshaft position sensor, I also put a new distributor cap and rotor on it. The plugs and wires were new this spring. I don't know what to do next with this thing.

It does it every time I start it cold. A warm start is fine but if it has been sitting for a while and the engine is cold it will usually do it.

Hopefully be out early enough tomorrow to take it to autozone to check codes. Doubt its gas cap as I had left mine at the gas station last week and didn't notice for a day or two. Same issues with or without cap on.

I would get the iac and Tps. Then reset the ecm and see. The misfires could be a result of either or both .
