Sound when slowing

I have an 02 JGC 4wd. The engine has been replaced and runs smooth. The transmission shifts flawlessly and doesn't slip. However as I'm slowing down it almost sounds like gears turning and slowing as the jeep slows. I hear nothing when it idles and it is actually somewhat louder when I first start driving but as I drive a while it quiets down a bit. The sound seems as if it is under where the gear shifter is slightly towards the front. Ang ideas would be appreciated.
