Smart Parts Trans? Review please.

Hi all.

My mechanic attempted to run a repair on my trans which didn't work out. As such he told me that if I bought a rebuild he would install it without a labor charge.

I can have a Smart Parts NV3550 delivered, and core returned, for $1195 (plus $300 core fee) and $0 install.
One year warranty on parts, but I'm responsible for future labor.

or...

A local place with a good rep can do a rebuild, cost of $1500+ and will provide a 1 year warranty including parts and labor.
Of course this nullifies the free install.

I've read both good and bad stories about Smart Parts.
Most stories are a few years old.

Anyone have any recent experience with them or with one of their trannies?
Would appreciate both positive and negative thoughts.

Garage
What about having the local place do the rebuild and the mechanic do the install?

Genius! I was so involved in the decision I overlooked that option. Will bring it up with both parties this weekend. If ever we meet, I owe you a beer.

(I am still looking for any reviews in case the above does not work out)
