Shoving into first gear

From a stop, i have to shove my shifter into first gear to get it to catch or else it will grind(and shove it really hard), second gear i need to push it in a little for it to catch. Anyone know why?

First I'd check the fluid level in the clutch master cyl. Then, fill in your JF profile so it's easy for us to see what vehicle you have.
